SGA Update 1/21/2016

This meeting of the Student Government Association was called to order on Thursday, January 21st, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the Black and Gold Room, Memorial Union on the campus of Fort Hays State University.

Legislation

Old Business: Bill 15/F/113 from the Office of the President was up for second reading at Thursday’s meeting. Resolution 15/F/101 and 15/F/102 in favor of voting down the Safe Campus Act were up for second reading as well. Both the bill and resolutions were passed.

New Business: Waivers 16/S/101, 16/S/102, and 16/S/113-all from the Office of the President- were up for first reading at Thursday’s meeting.

Reports

Executive:

President Ulises Gonzalez welcomed senators back for the spring semester. Gonzalez also shared that he had the opportunity to attend the Kansas Board of Regents meeting where they worked on releasing the results of the gun survey. He added that the new gun policy was approved by the KBOR.

Vice President Molly Morgan told senators that the final deadline for allocations is February 4th at 4:30 p.m. in the SGA office located in the Memorial Union.

Treasurer Jacob Taylor informed senators that he and President Gonzalez decided to raise the salary of the executive staff to $8.25, which is the minimum for on-campus student workers.

Legislative Affairs Director Emily Brandt reminded senators that Higher Education day is February 3rd and Tiger Day at the Capitol is February 23rd.

Campus Relations Director Rebecca Vincent is working with Dr. Martin to come up with a strategic plan to implement cultural competency. She added that the Cultural Competency Task Force is scheduled to meet on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the CSI office.

Committee:

The Appropriations Committee plans on having a bill up for reading two weeks from now.

The Senate Affairs Committee has no report for this week.

Student Relations and Involvement Committee congratulated  Senator Stephen Foster and Senator Morgen Pitts who will be the new chair and co-chair of the committee.

The Legislative and Political Action Committee is working on a student fee proposal that is still in progress.

Installation of New Members

No new members were installed at this meeting.

Speakers/Open Forum

President Gonzalez shared that he received an email from the Student Civic Leadership department regarding input about a survey based on gender and relationship violence here on campus.
