Fort Hays State Women’s Basketball, coming off the best season in the program’s NCAA Division II history, opens the 2015-16 season on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 13-14) in Marshall, Minn. The Tigers take on Upper Iowa Friday at 4 pm and then face Southwest Minnesota State on its home floor on Saturday at 5 pm.
The Tigers are coming off a 30-4 overall record in 2014-15. FHSU was the MIAA Regular Season Champion and hosted the Central Regional of the NCAA Tournament in Hays. FHSU advanced all the way to the regional finals before getting bowing out. It was the program’s first 30-win season in its NCAA Division II history and extended the program’s streak of 20-win seasons to four.
The Tigers return three of five starters from last year’s team and two All-MIAA selections from last year. Chelsea Mason is the top returning scorer on the team after averaging 12.5 points per game last year. Beth Bohuslavsky, one of the top ball security players in the nation, averaged 8.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game. Jill Faxon shot a team-best 41.1 percent beyond the 3-point line and Paige Lunsford is the top returning rebounder, pulling down 4.1 per game last year.
Fort Hays State is rated No. 10 in the WBCA Preseason Top 25. Upper Iowa went 7-20 overall and Southwest Minnesota State finished 3-24 overall last season.
