VICTORIA, Kan. – Fort Hays State placed fourth in the MIAA Men’s Cross Country Championships, held Saturday (Oct. 24) at Sand Plum Nature Trail. Cory Keehn nearly matched his time from the FHSU Tiger Open two weeks ago by finishing second individually in 24:08.
Vincent Kiprop of Missouri Southern claimed the individual title in a blazing-fast time of 23:40 on the 8K course, topping last year’s winning time by over a minute. Fort Hays State’s Cory Keehn was second in 24:08. The two pulled away from the rest of the pack as Keehn finished 37 seconds faster than the third-place finisher. Keehn grabbed All-MIAA honors once again. He was the conference’s individual champion as a sophomore in 2012.
Seth Parres earned an All-MIAA Honorable Mention nod by placing 20th in a time of 25:23. The Tigers had a pack behind him to push their way into a fourth-place finish. Isaac Williams was 22nd in 25:28, Jacob Thomas was 24th in 25:38, and Israel Barco was 28th in 25:51.
Nebraska-Kearney (63 points) claimed its first-ever MIAA Championships in men’s cross country, edging Southwest Baptist (71 points) by eight points. Pittsburg State finished third, just 14 points behind UNK.
Cole Wellnitz paced UNK with a third-place finish in a time of 24:45. Teammates Jahn Landrigan and Alex Obermier finished sixth and ninth respectively. SBU placed two inside the top 10 for All-MIAA honors, Cody Smith in seventh and Drew Cargill in eighth. Northwest Missouri also had two inside the top 10, Nolan Zimmer in fourth and Brayden Clews-Proctor in 10th. Austin Bogina of Pittsburg State also claimed All-MIAA status in fifth.
Fort Hays State competes at the NCAA Central Regional in two weeks in Joplin, Mo.
