The Results of the Hays Police Department’s Sobriety Checkpoint

Drunk DrivingThis past Sunday August 23rd, officers of the Hays Police Department conducted a sobriety checkpoint in the 1000 block of Vine Street in accordance with the Kansas Department of Transportation “Impaired Driving Deterrence Program”. The checkpoint ran from approximately 12:30 AM to 02:30 AM.

The purpose of the checkpoint was to improve the safety of our community by identifying impaired drivers and removing them from the roadway. As a result of the checkpoint, 79 vehicles were stopped, and 9 drivers were given on-site sobriety tests resulting in 2 DUI arrests. In addition to the 2 DUI arrests, there was 1 arrest for Possession of Hallucinogenic drug and Possession of Paraphernalia, and 1 arrest for Interference with a Law Enforcement Officer.

The Hays Police Department would like to remind and encourage individuals who go out and drink to have a Designated Driver or call Safe Ride at (785) 621-2580.  Safe Ride runs Wednesday through Saturday from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. to help you get home safely.
