On Monday, the Center for Student Involvement will host its annual event in recognition of World AIDS Day at the feature wall lobby in the Memorial Union from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
World AIDS Day is designed to help raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and recognize those who live with HIV/AIDS and those who have lost their lives in the fight against the disease.
“It’s important for college students to understand the topic and become more informed and aware about the topic,” said Alma Hidalgo, graduate assistant in the Center for Student Involvement.
The purpose of the local event is to provide Fort Hays State University students with more information about HIV/AIDS.
“We want to help spread awareness and not let people look at HIV/AIDS as a death sentence,” said Amber White, coordinator of Diversity Affairs and Student Involvement.
Red ribbons will be given out as a symbol of awareness and support for those living with HIV/AIDS. Cupcakes, informational cards and condoms will also be provided for students.
Students should not only become more informed about HIV/AIDS, but should take precautions if they are sexually active or once they decide to become sexually active, according to White.
“Knowing your status is important,” White said.
The Student Health Center will be giving free testing for sexually transmitted diseases all through the day, as well. Students are normally charged for these tests.
“Getting tested does not mean you are currently being sexually active, but it means that you are being sexually responsible,” White said.
FHSU students are encouraged to stop by and learn more about World AIDS Day and help spread awareness.
