Fort Hays State rolled to a 120-39 victory over McPherson College in its home opener, setting a school record for points in a single game on Wednesday (Nov. 19) at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

FHSU (2-1) was dominant from the field, shooting 58.8 percent from the field, including a 19-of-30 effort in the second half (63.3 percent).  From long range, FHSU hit on 55.6 percent of its attempts (10-of-18). As a team, the Tigers outrebounded the Bulldogs, 49-19 and dished out an impressive 28 assists in the win.

The Tigers opened the game on an 11-0 run in the first 2:56 and never looked back.  After stretching the lead to 16 (27-11) just inside the 10-minute mark, the Tigers put together a 28-2 run that lasted over eight minutes, and included two separate runs of 13 and 15 unanswered.  Kate Lehman had 10 points for FHSU during the stretch.

At the break, FHSU led the Bulldogs by 40 (58-18).  Lehman led all scorers with 22 points at the pause.

The second half began in similar fashion to the first, with the Tigers running off nine unanswered in the first 3:28 of play.  Combined with the end of the first half, FHSU’s run was its third 13-0 burst of the night.

Inside 16 minutes to play, Fort Hays State took full control with a 27-0 run that lasted 7:02.  Up by 49 (70-21), a layup from Lehman started a run that saw nine separate Tigers score, giving FHSU a 95-21 advantage.

FHSU’s final double-digit run of the night began at the 8:14 mark on a layup from Payton Hoeme.  From there, FHSU ran off eight more points unanswered, including a pair of free throws from Christine Russell that pushed FHSU past the century mark for the first time this season.

Jenna Ulrich‘s free throw with 1:35 to go set a new single game scoring record for the school, breaking the previous mark of 116 (set against Stephens College on Nov. 15, 2006).  Hoeme’s three-pointer with one minute to go was the Tigers’ final field goal of the night, as the game ended with an 81-point scoring margin in FHSU’s favor, 120-39.

Lehman led all scorers with 30 points, adding eight rebounds while just missing a double-double.  The performance was her second career game with at least 30 points.

Four other Tigers hit double-digits in scoring, as Jill Faxon (15 points), Hoeme (11 points), Beth Bohuslavsky (11 points) and Sarah Pimentel (10 points) ranked among the team leaders.

Bohuslavsky added four assists and four rebounds in the effort, going a perfect 3-for-3 from long range.  Joining her from the guard position, Nikola Kacperska played well in 13 minutes of action, dishing out a team-high six assists to go with six rebounds. Paige Lunsford‘s five assists was second highest on the team, matching her five rebounds.

Overall, seven Tigers set or tied career-highs in points, rebounds or assists in the contest, with three players (Kristin Huser, Taylor Menke and Hoeme) scoring their first career points.
