Killip, Inman win titles at Northern Colorado Open

Fort Hays State University grabbed two individual titles while having four Tigers finish in the Top 4 at the Northern Colorado Open on Saturday (Nov. 15) in Greeley, Colo.  Noah Killip (141 pounds) and Jon Inman (184 pounds) both won their second individual titles of the year, while Cash Drylie (197 pounds) was second, Trey Page (285 pounds) took third and William Homalon (133 pounds) finished fourth as an unattached wrestler.

Killip and Inman remain undefeated for the Tigers after winning their respective weight classes at last week’s Bethany Swede Open.

Killip started his day with a 6-0 decision against Koby Reyes of Arizona State before dominating Logan Stewart (Western Wyoming) with a 19-3 tech fall.  In the quarterfinal match, the 141-pounder turned in another impressive performance, winning 11-1 (major decision) over Nebraska-Kearney’s Brett LaBudda before earning a berth in the finals after knocking off Benjamin Polkowske (Northern Colorado), 6-3, in the semifinals.  Killip claimed the Tigers first title of the day with a 3-2 decision over Daniel Salazar (Colorado Mesa) in the first place match.

Inman’s day was just as dominant, starting his day with a first-round bye before pinning CSU-Pueblo’s Anthony Ball in 1:47.  In the semifinals, UNC’s Trent Noon dropped a 10-4 decision to Inman, sending the 2013-14 MIAA Freshman of the Year to the finals.  In the tournament’s final match of the day, Inman knocked off Dylan Gabel (UNC) by a 10-3 decision for FHSU’s second individual title.

Page received a bye in the first round before grabbing a 10-1 major decision over Jordan Passehl (CMU).  Page won by decision (5-3) over Utah Valley’s Dustin Dennison in the quarterfinals, but was tripped up in the semis by UNC’s Brian Macchione, who defeated Page in the first sudden victory period, 3-1.  Page responded to his first loss of the year by tech falling Passehl, 16-1 in the consolation semifinals and taking third place with a 11-4 decision over Dennison.

For the second time this season, Homalon found himself in the consolation bracket early, but once again responded by grinding through several rounds of wrestlebacks to reach the third place match.  Homalon started the day with a 9-5 decision over CSU-Pueblo’s Sam Hughes before falling to Zachary Shank of Western State in just 36 seconds. The freshman followed the loss with a major decision (15-7) over Michael Luca of UNC and three straight pins.  Homalon stuck Robbie Hines (Northwest Kansas Technical College) in 5:19, Arthur Tomax (Western Wyoming) in 3:49 and John Twomey (Air Force Prep) in 1:48 to reach the consolation semifinals, where he advanced due to an injury default by Shank.  In the third place match, Homalon’s run ended in a 9-5 decision loss to Jonathan Stelling (CMU).

As a team, the Tigers picked up 15 pins on the day and posted a 51-30 combined record for the day.

One Tiger will compete in tomorrow’s Central Missouri Open in Warrensburg, Mo., as Zach Kearney is scheduled to take part as an unattached wrestler. Next weekend, Fort Hays State heads to Kearney, Neb. for the UNK Open on Saturday (Nov. 22).
