Hays Symphony Orchestra to host inaugural concert saturday

The Hays Symphony Orchestra will celebrate its second century of performance with its inaugural concert this Saturday, Sept. 27 beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center on the Fort Hays State University campus.

Saturday’s performance will feature solo performances by associate professors Dr. Joseph Perniciaro and Brad Dawson.

Music pieces include “Being Alive” from the musical “Company,” “Oblivion” by Astor Piazzolla, “Symphony No. 8” by Antonin Dvorak, and “Sandpaper Ballet” by Leroy Anderson.

“There is a lot of variety on this one,” Perniciaro said. “You’ll have some fun, interesting works in the first half. The second half is a Dvorak symphony. It is a major work. It’s an exciting thing for the symphony.”

The orchestra will also feature Dr. David Upham as guest conductor. Upham is the orchestra conductor at the University of New Hampshire and the founding director of the UNH Youth Symphony Orchestras.

Tickets are $7 for the general public and $5 for senior citizens. FHSU students are free with student ID.
