At the Memorial Union at Fort Hays State University, voting is possible for all students no matter what their residence is.
Ellis County has 18 locations to vote in the upcoming Nov. 4 general election. One is located on FHSU’s campus inside the Union, just east of the University Bookstore at the student service center kiosk.
“Students may register anytime during the school year with the Student Government Association,” said Donna Maskus, Ellis County clerk and election officer. “Our office calls every month to see if they have any new students that registered to vote.”
To register to vote on paper, students can stop by the Student Government Association office in the Center for Student Involvement to pick up a voter registration form and mail it in once it is completed. First-time voters must provide a copy of a valid driver’s license or proof of residency.
Students who are not from Kansas must first apply to be a registered Kansas voter. When registering, students may either claim their hometown address or current residence in Ellis County as their permanent address.
“If students do not want their vote to count here, they can vote and we can send it on to their own county,” Maskus said.
Voters have until Oct. 14 to register to vote for the upcoming Nov. 4 general election. Voter registration forms are to be mailed to: Election Office, PO Box 720, Hays, KS 67601.
Students may also register to vote online. The link is available at www.fhsu.edu/sga/vote.
