At the first Student Government Association meeting on Sept. 11, Arin Powers, Woodward, Okla., senior, was sworn in as president.
Powers was first sworn in as vice president in May after Chris Roberts, Salina senior, announced his decision to go on indefinite leave. She then became acting president June 1 by default.
“Arin Powers is an exceptional leader and someone who I greatly admire. I chose her as a running mate for her tenacity and passion for helping others. She will continue striving for a better student experience on campus,” said Chris Roberts.
Roberts was arrested back in February for domestic battery and then arrested again in April for a DUI. On July 21, Roberts was convicted of disorderly conduct and given 12 months probation.
“Consequences have actions. I chose to get behind the wheel and put people in danger. It was incredibly irresponsible and hope others learn from my mistake,” said Roberts
While at the meeting, it was announced that Eris Wilson is stepping in as the interim vice president.
“ I have appointed Eris Wilson to serve as the interim vice president so the Student Government office can remain operating effectively during this time,” Powers said.
At the moment, there is no official procedure on how to choose a president or vice president if one cannot serve the following term, so SGA proceeded to accept applications for the position.
“After all applications have been reviewed, interviews will take place and a bill with the name of the proposed vice president will go before the senate for a vote,” Powers said.
Not only is the position of vice president being reviewed, but the public relations director position is open to applicants as well.
“This year, I think, holds a lot of potential for Student Government to reflect and grow from our experiences of this past year,” Powers said. “I look forward to strengthening the partnership between the campus and the Hays community through several programs that are currently in the works, as well as addressing concerns with campus safety and affordability.”
