For others, it starts with a goodbye to family and the realization that the room they are walking into will soon become home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" students began arriving on campus this week, residence halls filled with boxes, moving carts, and families helping students settle into their new spaces. But for FHSU\u2019s Residential Life staff, move-in is about more than getting students into their rooms. It is also the beginning of helping students find a community on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMove-in is really the first opportunity we have to meet a lot of these students and make that first connection,\u201d Tiger Place and Wooster Place Community Director Aden Temanson said. \u201cThey\u2019re coming into a new environment, and we want them to know there are people here who are ready to help them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FHSU\u2019s 2026-27 move-in process began last Saturday with apartment residents, followed by specialized groups on Wednesday. First-year students moved into McMindes Hall on Thursday, with upperclassmen scheduled to move in today. During the primary morning move-in periods, volunteers are available to help students move their belongings into their rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For first-year students, the process can be both exciting and overwhelming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was kind of crazy seeing everything in my room because it made it feel real,\u201d freshman student Carlee Dye said. \u201cI\u2019ve been looking forward to college for so long, but actually being here and saying goodbye to my parents made it feel like, \u2018OK, I\u2019m really doing this.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While students work to make their rooms feel like their own, they are also meeting the people they will see throughout the semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to FHSU Residential Life, students are encouraged to begin getting involved as soon as they arrive. Welcome Weekend and the First 40 Days provide opportunities for students to meet each other, learn about campus organizations and connect with university resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Temanson said those early interactions can make a difference in how students adjust to college life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSometimes it\u2019s something as simple as saying hi to the person across the hallway or going to an event when you don\u2019t know anybody,\u201d Temanson said. \u201cThose little things can turn into friendships and make the residence hall feel a lot more like home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For returning students, move-in can look a little different. Instead of figuring out where everything is for the first time, they are returning to a familiar environment and reconnecting with friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s definitely less stressful than freshman year,\u201d junior student Caleb Johnson said. \u201cYou already know where everything is, you know some of the people around you, and you kind of know what to expect. It feels more like coming back home than starting completely over.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Families also play an important role in the process, often spending the first part of the day helping students unload their belongings and organize their rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some parents, however, the final box being carried inside signals that it is almost time to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s exciting because you know they\u2019re ready for this, but it\u2019s still hard to drive away,\u201d parent Carrie Dye said. \u201cYou spend 18 years helping them with everything, and then all of a sudden they\u2019re moving into a dorm room and starting to do it on their own.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FHSU asked parents and families to say their goodbyes by 4:30 p.m. Thursday so students could attend floor meetings and begin getting to know their neighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For residence life staff, those meetings and first conversations are part of a larger effort to help students feel connected beyond their individual rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYour room is just your room,\u201d Temanson said. \u201cThe people around you are what make it a community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the last boxes are unpacked and parents begin heading home, the noise of move-in day will eventually settle down. Empty hallways will become busy with students, doors will stay open as friends visit one another and residence halls will begin to feel less like buildings and more like communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For students arriving at FHSU, move-in may begin with finding their room, but the days that follow are about finding their place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think that\u2019s the biggest thing we want students to understand,\u201d Temanson said. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to figure everything out on your first day.
