Fort Hays State University\u2019s Theater Department is kicking off the fall season with \u201cLove\u2019s Labour\u2019s Lost,\u201d a 90-minute comedic take on Shakespeare set in the 1960s. The production offers a lively introduction to Shakespeare for both students and audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The play follows four young men who vow to forgo wine, women, and salt for three years to focus on their studies – until a princess and her court move in next door, sparking chaos and comedic romance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want to make Shakespeare fun and accessible to everyone,\u201d Theatre Director Catherine Trieschmann Miller said. \u201cIt\u2019s full of dirty jokes, swordplay, wit, and romance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trieschmann Miller adapted the script to keep it fast-paced and engaging, especially for students who may be unfamiliar with Shakespeare. The idea came from students who participated in last year\u2019s fall play, \u201cThe Amish Project,\u201d who expressed interest in doing Shakespeare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freshman Jordan Achenbrenner, cast as the Princess of France, said taking on Shakespeare for the first time is a rewarding challenge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never really done Shakespeare,\u201d Achenbrenner said. \u201cSo challenging myself with Shakespeare will be a great experience for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Junior Caleb Johnson, cast as Longaville, echoed Achenbrenner\u2019s sentiment about the challenge of performing Shakespeare. He said memorizing long lines and mastering Shakespeare\u2019s rhythm requires a different approach than modern plays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShakespeare is so different, because it\u2019s just like poetry. You\u2019re just reading poetry on the stage, and it\u2019s harder to understand what you\u2019re saying,\u201d Johnson said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the challenges, Johnson said the cast\u2019s energy is encouraging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a really good cast, and everybody seems to be pretty good for that, so I\u2019m excited,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trieschmann Miller said the production is about more than acting; it’s a chance for students to learn about tackling challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want students to see that they can take on something difficult and still enjoy it. It\u2019s about growth, teamwork, and discovering what you\u2019re capable of,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
