The 25th-ranked Fort Hays State men’s wrestling team racked up five podium finishes Saturday (Dec. 2) at the 2023 Bob Smith Open.\u00a0Drew Bell<\/a><\/dfn>\u00a0(141 pounds) and\u00a0Riah Ostrander<\/a><\/dfn>\u00a0(285 pounds) both finished third, while\u00a0Tony Caldwell<\/a><\/dfn>\u00a0(285 pounds) picked up a fourth-place finish and both\u00a0Tereus Henry<\/a><\/dfn>\u00a0(197 pounds) and\u00a0Connor Padgett<\/a><\/dfn>\u00a0(174 pounds) finished fifth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bell picked up an 11-0 major decision against a wrestler from Oklahoma State before reeling off a pair of pins to reach the semifinals, including a second-round pin in just 32 seconds, the fastest by a Tiger so far this season. He fell in the semis to another OSU Cowboy before winning 10-9 in the consolation semifinals and by no contest in the third-place match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bell’s three bonus-point wins were tied with Henry and Matthew Rodriguez<\/a><\/dfn> for the most on the team on Saturday. Henry, the third-ranked wrestler in Division II at 197 pounds, opened the day with a trio of technical falls before dropping back-to-back matches in the consolation bracket. Rodriguez turned in a 3-2 afternoon at 184 pounds with one pin and two major decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wrestling unattached, Ostrander reached the semifinals after an opening-round pin and two shutout decisions in the second round and quarterfinals. He fell in the semis to the eventual champion before defeating fellow Tiger Caldwell in the third-place match, 4-2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caldwell also stumbled against the eventual champion at 285 pounds before reeling off a major decision and a pair of decisions in the consolation bracket to reach the third-place match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connor Padgett<\/a><\/dfn> was 3-1 before bowing out due to injury, picking up a technical fall and a pin before reaching the semifinals thanks to an injury default.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five other Tigers picked up multiple bonus-point wins on the day, including a pair of pins from A.B. Stokes<\/a><\/dfn> in his first action as a Tiger (unattached). Camden Padgett<\/a><\/dfn>also recorded two pins in the championship bracket to reach the quarterfinals, while Hunter Harris<\/a><\/dfn> tallied one technical fall and one major decision. Kevin Honas<\/a><\/dfn>tallied a pin and one major decision, with D’Andre Brown<\/a><\/dfn> recording two major decisions on the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Tigers will return to action in two weeks when they travel to Indianapolis for the Midwest Classic December 16-17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
