JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Fort Hays State track and field teams had another banner day on the final day of the 2023 MIAA Outdoor Championships Sunday (May 7), picking up three more conference championships, nine All-MIAA honors, 11 national qualifying marks and two school records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the week, the Tigers had five individual event conference champions (three men, two women), their highest total since 2017, 14 All-MIAA honorees (nine women, five men), their highest total since 2008, and 26 national qualifying performances (16 women, 10 men).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Tiger women recorded their best-ever finish since joining the MIAA in the 2006-07 season, placing third with 108 points. The team point total was 20 points more than their previous MIAA-best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Tiger men racked up 79.5 points, their best point total in five years, to finish in sixth place, just 3.5 back of fourth place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lyric Holman<\/a><\/dfn> climbed to the top of the MIAA podium for the fifth time in her career after winning the 200m dash finals with a time of 23.82. It was a wind-legal lifetime best for the Junction City, Kan. native that improved her season-best by 0.16 seconds. The senior also finished fifth in the 100m dash with a season-best time of 11.45 that ranks 10th in NCAA Division II this season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After breaking the school record with a time of 10.23 in the 100m dash prelims, Philip Landrum<\/a><\/dfn> duplicated that effort in the finals on Sunday to finish in first place by a full tenth of a second. It was Landrum’s fourth conference championship, including two relay titles and a pair of individual championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regan Hodsden<\/a><\/dfn> continued her impressive sophomore season for the Tigers, earning her fifth All-MIAA medal of the year after winning the 5,000m run with a time of 17:54.48. The Mitchell, Neb. native was All-MIAA, All-Region and All-American in cross country and earned a pair of All-MIAA medals both indoors and outdoors. Jaycee Vath<\/a><\/dfn> was sixth in the 5K with a time of 18:17.42, contributing six team points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Landrum capped off the weekend alongside Hayden Albright<\/a><\/dfn>, Ethan Lang<\/a><\/dfn> and Nolan Churchman<\/a><\/dfn> on the 4x400m relay team that finished second with a school-record time of 3:10.52. The quartet previously won the indoor 4x400m title before climbing onto the All-MIAA podium for the second time this year on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The women’s 4x400m relay team of Holman, Reba Mader<\/a><\/dfn>, Taylor Savolt<\/a><\/dfn> and Mattie Rossi<\/a><\/dfn> also broke the school record en route to an All-MIAA finish. The Tigers crossed the line in 3:44.72, 0.4 seconds ahead of the previous school record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier in the day Savolt and Rossi both finished on the All-MIAA podium in the 400m hurdles. Savolt ran a lifetime best 59.45 to finish second, climbing into sixth on the NCAA Division II national performance list this season, while Rossi was just behind in third with a time of 59.55. Chloe Stanley<\/a><\/dfn> was sixth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:04.51, giving the Tigers 17 team points from the single race. Rossi earlier finished fifth in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.09.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emily Salmans<\/a><\/dfn> earned her third All-MIAA medal with a second-place finish in the 1,500m run, completing the race in 4:38.77. Faith Little<\/a><\/dfn> was sixth in the same race with a time of 4:40.56, earning three team points and etching her name in seventh on the FHSU DII era performance chart. Salmans later finished sixth in the 800m run finals with a time of 2:17.25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ethan Lang<\/a><\/dfn> is now the owner of 12 All-MIAA awards after finishing third in the 800m run finals with a time of 1:53.00. Aaron Mangan<\/a><\/dfn> (1:55.11) was fifth in that race and Trever Medina<\/a><\/dfn> (1:56.35) was sixth, giving the Tigers 13 team points from one middle distance race. Medina also contributed five team points in the 1,500m run via a fourth-place finish (3:49.76).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Albright finished fourth in the 400m dash finals after crossing the line in 47.91, good for five team points. He also teamed up with Landrum, Kenny Fritsch<\/a><\/dfn> and Toby Wahlmeier<\/a><\/dfn> to run the 4x100m relay in 40.83, good for fifth place and four more team points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The women’s 4x100m relay team of Jasey Downing<\/a><\/dfn>, Kinley Brown<\/a><\/dfn>, Tori Poe<\/a><\/dfn> and Holman opened the day with a time of 46.67, good for fifth place and four team points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two Tigers scored team points in field events on Sunday, including Jessica Saunders<\/a><\/dfn> finishing fifth in the discus throw with a top toss of 134-3 and Dayton Williams<\/a><\/dfn>placing seventh in the high jump after a clearance of the bar at 6-9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Tigers will return to action next Saturday (May 13) at the Loper Twilight in Kearney, Neb. with one last chance to improve their standing on the national qualifying list. The 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships are scheduled for May 25-27 in Pueblo, Colo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
