KEARNEY, Neb. – The 17th-ranked Fort Hays State wrestling team fell to third-ranked Nebraska-Kearney on Friday (Feb. 3). The Tigers fought hard in every match, with five of the eight FHSU losses coming by way of decision. FHSU moves to 2-12 overall and 1-2 in the MIAA while UNK improves to 10-6 overall and 2-0 in the conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UNK jumped out to an early lead with a fall at 125 pounds and a decision at 133. Jacob Mitchell<\/a><\/dfn> claimed the first win for the Tigers at 141 pounds, outscoring his opponent 9-1 in the final period to claim a 14-7 decision. The Manhattan, Kan. native finished the bout just five seconds short of a ride-time point and thus a major decision.

The Lopers regained control after the Mitchell win, taking the next five matches including one fall. Third-ranked Austin Eldredge managed a 5-4 decision over fourth-ranked Cade Lindsey<\/a><\/dfn> at 174 pounds. The match was tied at the end of the third period, but Eldredge was able to claim a point via riding time to win the match.

The second Tiger victory occurred at 197 pounds where fourth-ranked Tereus Henry<\/a><\/dfn> secured an 8-1 decision. Nebraska-Kearney wrapped up the match with a second period fall in the heavyweight bout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
