{"id":68787,"date":"2022-10-26T14:29:37","date_gmt":"2022-10-26T19:29:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=68787"},"modified":"2022-10-27T11:14:49","modified_gmt":"2022-10-27T16:14:49","slug":"college-republicans-and-young-democrats-square-off-in-second-annual-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=68787","title":{"rendered":"College Republicans and Young Democrats square off in second annual debate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>BY ALICIA FEYERHERM<br>VIDEO BY NICK McCOY<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FHSU\u2019s chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society, hosted its second annual debate between the College Republicans and the Young Democrats on Tuesday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Britton Haigh, Noah Erichsen and Alex Johnson represented the College Republicans while<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skylar Zimmerman, Madison Albers, Addison Mininger and Miriam Benavides represented the Young Democrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"2022 Political Smackdown Debate\" width=\"790\" height=\"444\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_IvsPEXd5kI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Gun violence, the governor\u2019s race and the cost of higher education were some of the main focuses of the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>College Republicans viewed gun violence and school shootings as a result of a mental health crisis, referencing the shooting in Uvalde.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe teenager who decided to grab the gun and go walk across the street to that school, suffered from many, many mental issues,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Young Democrats argued that while mental health should be prioritized, age-restricting assault rifles would also decrease gun violence. Zimmerman said the Uvalde shooter bought an assault rifle the day after he turned 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think the cause of the phenomena of mass shooters in America is a lack of regulation and policy surrounding the topic,\u201d Zimmerman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haigh was unconvinced, saying that adding more restrictions would not solve the issue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe can regulate, regulate, regulate all you want, but we\u2019re still left with broken people,\u201d Haigh said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When discussing the upcoming governor\u2019s race, Young Democrats said they supported Laura Kelly because of all she has done during the pandemic and what she continues to do to support schools and the economy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s a smart politician, and in general, Laura Kelly has done an exemplary job as governor,\u201d Benavides said. \u201cI don\u2019t know why we wouldn\u2019t re-elect her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The College Republicans were more concerned about Laura Kelly\u2019s strict COVID-19 policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe reality is, Laura Kelly was one of the first to shut down schools and churches in the nation,\u201d Haigh said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haigh further elaborated saying the shutdown of the state led to increased mental health issues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think that has led to a mental health crisis,\u201d Haigh said. \u201cI think it\u2019s important to realize that locking down schools and churches was a big part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tuition costs and student loan forgiveness was the most heavily debated topic of the night with back-and-forth lasting nearly 15 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>College Republicans firmly believed that the government should not give handouts to students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI strongly believe college and attending a university is not a right, it\u2019s a privilege,\u201d Johnson said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Young Democrats argued that while everyone shouldn\u2019t get the most expensive, private education available, but college should be affordable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou could work full-time making $7.25, the minimum wage set by the federal government, however, and still not afford the $20,000 average education in this nation,\u201d Mininger said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Erichsen said he did not want tax dollars going to pay for students who did not put in effort in high school.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe worked for our ACT scores, we worked to get those scholarships, but I will be paying these taxes to pay for someone else\u2019s education,\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Albers brought up that her family is just below the poverty line and even with her stellar academics and involvement in multiple organizations, she still barely affords Fort Hays State.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo matter how hard I work to get my ACTs or no matter how many clubs I joined, no matter how many volunteer hours I put into it, it doesn\u2019t mean that I can still afford a college education,\u201d Albers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Albers said it\u2019s easy to make generalizations about those receiving aid, but everyone has their own story.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not just taking your money for handouts,\u201d Albers said. \u201cI have a dream to become an immigration lawyer to help out my community and the struggles I can see.
