{"id":67842,"date":"2022-09-30T08:53:02","date_gmt":"2022-09-30T13:53:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=67842"},"modified":"2022-09-30T08:53:03","modified_gmt":"2022-09-30T13:53:03","slug":"hays-symphony-to-perform-masterworks-concert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=67842","title":{"rendered":"Hays Symphony to perform Masterworks Concert"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>BY CAITLIN LEIKER<br><em>Feature image from HSO Fall show<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hays Symphony Orchestra will be performing this year\u2019s first Masterworks concert, <em>American Tapestry, <\/em>this weekend.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Hays Symphony website, \u201c<em>American Tapestry<\/em> will feature Ivalah Allen singing Samuel Barber\u2019s lush and nostalgic <em>Knoxville: Summer of 1915<\/em>. Three rarely-heard works by the great American composers David Diamond, Wallingford Riegger, and Morton Gould will complete our sonic tapestry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each piece was chosen for its distinctive voice. All of the works were written from 1939 to 1954 \u2013 a part of the art that emerged from World War II and the beginning of the Cold War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This produced both acknowledgments of, and escapes from the tragedies of the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HSO Director Brian Buckstead said that he likes to program and perform works by American composers, as they tend to be \u201cunderappreciated and underperformed\u201d in a genre that is most often Euro-centric. Buckstead explained that the music, coming from the American perspective in such a time, could really speak to the audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is <em>our<\/em> music,\u201d Buckstead said. \u201cI think they are great composers that deserve to be heard. They have these pieces that are overshadowed by Beethoven\u2019s symphonies, the Brahms symphonies, and Tchaikovsky, which are all great\u2026but I like to highlight these lesser-known works and composers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buckstead described classical music as \u201ca living, breathing thing,\u201d always moving forward and growing. While it\u2019s important to keep an eye out for new composers and works, it\u2019s just as crucial to rediscover the \u201chidden composers of the past,\u201d such as the ones to be featured in <em>American Tapestry.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a conductor, I look for those pieces of music, and as a violinist and violist, I like to perform that music that\u2019s kind of hidden in the shadows, but perhaps shouldn\u2019t be,\u201d Buckstead said. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of music out there in the world.
