FHSU\u2019s Music Department will host a free faculty showcase Friday. After several years without a showcase, the occasion will put a spotlight on the music faculty\u2019s expertise in action.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the past, the department hosted a faculty showcase annually but it was discontinued due to waning availability. The COVID-19 pandemic lengthened the hiatus. Music Department Chair, Benjamin Cline, said he plans to continue the yearly showcase \u201cas long as there\u2019s interest.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s good to change things up,\u201d Cline said, wanting to avoid concerts \u201cwhere it\u2019s the same thing over and over again, so you kind of stop paying attention.\u201d

The faculty showcase will span a variety of genres, stretching from the Classical and Romantic periods to works composed within the last few years.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the newer works to be performed by Cline was composed by professor Timothy Rolls, incorporating cello and electronics. Cline had already played Rolls\u2019s piece in Belgium, but once COVID shutdowns hit, playing it for a Hays audience was out of the question until this summer\u2019s High Plains Music Camp.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m playing it again, but it\u2019s [Roll\u2019s] piece,\u201d Cline said. \u201cThe composer is on our program as if he were the performer.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, with COVID restrictions reduced and classes back in session, Cline said it\u2019s not just \u201ca year of return,\u201d but a year of \u201cfeeling more normalized\u201d…something that can be celebrated with the return of an event like the faculty recital.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vocal professor Ivalah Allen, one of the scheduled performers, expressed excitement while referring to the showcase as an \u201copportunity for collaboration\u201d before schedules get tighter later in the semester.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want to show the students that, not only do the faculty teach, but we also \u2018do\u2019,\u201d Allen said. \u201cIt shows artistry and musicianship, but it\u2019s mostly an introduction to the music faculty\u2013 not only for our students and the campus, but for the community as well.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recital will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the Beach\/Schmidt Performing Arts Center. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
