The National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security recently redesignated Fort Hays State University as a Center for Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Melissa Hunsicker Walburn, chair of the Department of\nInformatics at FHSU, and Mr. Jason Zeller, the department\u2019s cybersecurity\nfaculty lead, accepted the award at a ceremony held in conjunction with the\nSpring 2022 National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) conference\nand expo in Atlanta, Ga. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hunsicker Walburn welcomed the re-designation that will extend\nthrough 2027, noting that programs earning this redesignation demonstrated\nquality through alignment with the high standards set by the NSA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We work hard to ensure our programs are dynamic and\nevolving to meet the current and future cybersecurity talent needs of\ngovernment and business. Opportunities in this area are abundant for people\nwith the right skills,” she said.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“While the standards for this designation are high, this\nredesignation affirms a quality baseline for students seeking a credential, as\nwell as current professionals looking for a pathway to upskill.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zeller added that in addition to curriculum aligning to\nstandards, the redesignation process requires community outreach and evidence\nof experiential student learning opportunities. \u201cOur commitment to students\nlearning in hands-on experiences can be a differentiator.  Those\nexperiences force you to learn problem-solving skills that can be difficult to\nteach, but are important to challenge students to develop through\nexperience.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency(CISA), an\noperational component of the Department of Homeland Security, works with the\nNational Security Agency (NSA) on the National Centers of Academic Excellence\nin Cybersecurity (NCAE-C) program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The partnership aims to help reduce vulnerabilities in our\nnational and critical infrastructure by promoting higher education and\nexpertise in cybersecurity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Center of Academic Excellence (NCAE) designation\nprogram promotes higher education programs in information assurance and cyber\ndefense to address the critical shortage of professionals with these skills,\nhighlighting higher education’s vital role in defending America’s cyberspace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

FHSU was the first Kansas institution to earn this designation\nin 2009. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NCAE designation is awarded only to educational institutions\nthat meet the standards of excellence for cyber security established by the NSA\nand DHS. The criteria have expanded in scope and increased in number over the\npast few years as security and technology challenges evolve rapidly.\n\n FHSU’s\nInformatics Department offers graduate and undergraduate cyber\nsecurity\/information assurance programs.
