{"id":65022,"date":"2022-05-12T14:31:56","date_gmt":"2022-05-12T19:31:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=65022"},"modified":"2022-05-12T14:31:58","modified_gmt":"2022-05-12T19:31:58","slug":"fhsu-announces-2nd-cohort-of-schmidt-foundation-scholars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=65022","title":{"rendered":"FHSU announces 2nd cohort of Schmidt Foundation Scholars"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Julina Wall can hardly wait to tell the 2023 cohort of Schmidt Foundation Scholars how blessed they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wall,\na Fort Hays State University student from Ingalls, was a member of the\ninaugural class of first-generation students who last year received a full-ride\nscholarship to FHSU. She worked on a hay farm prior to being awarded the\nfull-ride scholarship to attend Fort Hays State. Growing up, finances were\nalways tight, and she was convinced that working her way through a community\ncollege was her only option for earning a college degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schmidt\nFoundation Scholars receive 30 hours of tuition and fees for fall and spring\ncourses, books, and room and board. Recipients can renew their scholarship for\nup to three additional years by maintaining their academic standing and\ncontinuing to meet the scholarship requirements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing\na Schmidt Foundation Scholar has been a huge blessing,\u201d Wall said. \u201cAs a\nnursing major taking on some challenging classes, the financial support has\nallowed me to focus on academics and organizations on campus that I\u2019m\npassionate about. I would not have been able to maintain a 4.0 GPA throughout\nthe academic year without the scholarship support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior\nto being named a Schmidt Foundation Scholar, Wall had stressed about her dreams\nand goals being delayed or limited due to finances. She is an example of the\npotential that FHSU students hold if given the opportunity. Wall looks forward\nto the next few years at FHSU and ultimately plans to stay in western Kansas \u2013\npotentially working in the pediatric field following graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preference\nfor these scholarships is given to first-generation students from Kansas\nplanning to&nbsp;major in healthcare, education, business, entrepreneurship,\narts, or communication programs at Fort Hays State University.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nselection committee looks at students who show strong academic ability,\nresilience, and the leadership skills necessary to make significant\ncontributions to the university, the community of Hays, and the state of\nKansas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This\nyear\u2019s recipients, who will begin classes at FHSU in the fall of 2022, listed\nwith their hometowns, high schools, and planned majors, are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Josey\nDove, Nortonville, Jefferson West High School, music education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David\nMorones, Olathe, Olathe North High School, performing arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clarissa\nSheahan, Garnett, Anderson County High School, biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guadalupe\nUrbina-Montes, Wichita, Wichita North High School, pre-nursing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Xandria\nVanWinkle, Vassar, Lyndon High School, social work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS Julina Wall can hardly wait to tell the 2023 cohort of Schmidt Foundation Scholars how blessed they are.
