{"id":65016,"date":"2022-05-12T14:29:27","date_gmt":"2022-05-12T19:29:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=65016"},"modified":"2022-05-12T14:29:29","modified_gmt":"2022-05-12T19:29:29","slug":"students-honored-at-annual-kams-ams-ceremony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=65016","title":{"rendered":"Students honored at annual KAMS\/AMS ceremony"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twenty-eight students from the Kansas Academy of Mathematics &amp; Science (KAMS) and the Academy of Mathematics &amp; Science (AMS) were honored at the 2022 completion ceremony Saturday in Fort Hays State University\u2019s Memorial Union. This was the 12th graduating class of the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>KAMS is Kansas&#8217; premier early college\nresidential program designed to provide a STEM-focused academic experience for\ngifted and talented high school juniors and seniors. AMS is an early college\nprogram open to international and out-of-state domestic students, offering an\nunparalleled educational experience for gifted and talented high school\nstudents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year&#8217;s student speakers were Cooper\nKrueger from Bonner Springs and Yao-Wen &#8220;Joe&#8221; Liu from Taiwan.\nStudent speakers are selected based on academic success achieved during their\ntime in the program and involvement in clubs\/activities, research, and\ncommunity service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liu, who is planning on majoring in\ncomputer science at the University of Florida next year, thanked everyone who\nhelped him succeed in the program but focused primarily on his friendships\nwhile in KAMS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;My roommate really helped me\nadjust,&#8221; Liu said. &#8220;We made memories that can&#8217;t be bought with money,\nmemories I will cherish for the rest of my life.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Krueger, who is planning to study\nfisheries and wildlife biology and entomology at Michigan State University,\nfocused on the opportunities the KAMS\/AMS programs provide while acknowledging\nits rigor. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is not a program for everyone\n\u2026 and the path to get here was full of challenges,&#8221; Krueger said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We would not have made it without\neach other,&#8221; Krueger admitted, thanking faculty, staff, and the other\ngraduates for their support and friendship. &#8220;It has been an honor to be a\npart of the KAMS\/AMS 2022 cohort.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will Burns, director of Early College\nPrograms at Fort Hays State, shared some facts about this year&#8217;s KAMS\/AMS\nstudents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>This class earned over $1 million in scholarships for the next academic year.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>This class&#8217;s average exiting ACT composite was a 30 composite, which is at the 93 percentile of all national exam takers.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The average exiting SAT score was 1465, which is at the 98 percentile.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These extremely gifted, talented,\nand innovative seniors will be the movers and shakers of tomorrow,&#8221; Burns\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While continuing on to universities\nacross the nation, including schools like the Massachusetts Institute of\nTechnology and Carnegie Mellon University, many KAMS\/AMS students choose to\nstay in Kansas, with eight planning to stay at Fort Hays State.
