The donation is curated as an academic research collection and encompasses nearly 200 artworks by renowned New York-based artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ndonor, Rosemary Hornak, is a Midwest-based artist, art collector, and retired\nreal estate developer. She worked as a studio artist alongside her brother,\nfounding Photorealist artist, Ian Hornak (1944-2002). Portions of her\ncollection have been the subject of museum exhibitions nationwide. In the last\n15 years, she has donated hundreds of artworks by the country\u2019s leading artists\nto approximately 50 museums throughout the United States including, the\nSmithsonian Institution, Library of Congress, Dartmouth College, and The George\nWashington University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rosemary\nHornak\u2019s son brought Fort Hays State to her attention after he graduated from\nthe university in 2021, and she chose FHSU as the beneficiary of this portion\nof her collection. FHSU history instructor Hollie Marquess helped facilitate\nthe donation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ncollection will reside in FHSU\u2019s Schmidt Foundation Center for Art and Design.\nIt includes comprehensive retrospective sub-collections of artwork by Jon\nCarsman (1944-1987), Ian Hornak (1944-2002) \u2013 the donor\u2019s late brother \u2013 and\nScott Kahn (1946).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jon\nCarsman was one of the most successful artists in New York during the 1960s,\n\u201970s, and \u201980s, having been credited as one of the artists who helped to\nre-popularize Realism in painting following its demise during the Abstract\nExpressionist movement of the 1950s. Carsman\u2019s artwork is owned by most major\nmuseums in the United States, including the National Gallery of Art,\nSmithsonian Institution, Metropolitan Museum of Art; and locally, the Wichita\nArt Museum, Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art at Kansas State University,\nand the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ian\nHornak was one of the founding artists of the Photorealist movement in the\n1960s and later one of the country\u2019s most celebrated artists.&nbsp;He was described by the New York Times as \u201cright at the top\nof the list of romantically descriptive painters today.\u201d His artwork is\nincluded in the collections of major museums nationwide, including the\nSmithsonian Institution, Library of Congress, Dartmouth College\u2019s Hood Museum,\nMuseum of Fine Arts Boston, and locally, the Albrecht Kemper Museum of Art in\nSt. Joseph, Mo. His paintings were the subject of Barack Obama\u2019s Presidential\nInaugural exhibition at the Federal Reserve on the National Mall in Washington\nD.C. in 2013 and have sold for up to $165,000 each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott\nKahn is currently one of the most popular artists in the United States. Several\nof his paintings recently sold at Christie\u2019s and Phillips auction houses for\nnearly $1 million each. Kahn\u2019s work has been exhibited nationally and\ninternationally, and several of his pieces are included in the collections of\nmajor public, corporate, and private collections around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rosemary\nHornak, the donor, said, \u201cI hope for this donation to help to attract\nadditional national attention and respect for Fort Hays State, as well as to\naid the students, faculty, and the Hays community in their studies, work, and\npersonal enjoyment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\nhas committed to ongoing donations to the university as she downsizes her\ncollection, including artworks by some of the most renowned artists in the\nworld, including Robert Indiana, Jasper Johns, Robert Motherwell, and Robert\nRauschenberg.\n\nIn addition to instructor Marquess, the\nuniversity is grateful to Colin Schmidtberger, the director of the Moss-Thorns\nGallery, and Schuyler Coates, a director of development at the Fort Hays State\nFoundation, for their invaluable assistance in making this donation possible\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS Fort Hays State University is pleased to announce a large donation of artwork to the university\u2019s permanent collection.
