{"id":64605,"date":"2022-04-12T15:47:41","date_gmt":"2022-04-12T20:47:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=64605"},"modified":"2022-04-12T15:47:43","modified_gmt":"2022-04-12T20:47:43","slug":"fhsu-aikido-club-spring-seminar-a-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=64605","title":{"rendered":"FHSU Aikido Club spring seminar a success"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>BY ALICIA FEYERHERM<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fort Hays\u2019 Aikido Club hosted its spring seminar last Friday through Sunday.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President and Chief Instructor of the Aikido Association of America, Stephen Toyoda Sensei,&nbsp; taught at the event.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the past, we\u2019ve had instructors from Utah, multiple different states, and it\u2019s always really great to see different people from all over the country,\u201d Webmaster Historian for the Fort Hays Aikido Club Riley Sanford said.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"FHSU Aikido Club hosts spring seminar\" width=\"790\" height=\"444\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JNardYmw1J8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Seeing how different instructors teach skills can be beneficial for participants.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always nice having a teacher who is from out of town, who may teach things a little differently than what you\u2019re used to,\u201d member of the Northwest Kansas Dojo Claire Nickerson said. \u201cI\u2019ve been to several different seminars and I always take a lot of notes.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This event brings people from all across the nation including some from other Aikido associations.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are several different Aikido associations and they may do skills a little differently and seeing those variations on techniques is fun,\u201d Nickerson said.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the variety of body types and skill levels help participants improve.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you practice with people from other dojos, they have different bodies in general,\u201d Sanford said. \u201cSome people are more or less flexible, some people are more or less stiff, different limb proportions &#8211; it\u2019s very different person to person.\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 40 participants attended the seminar with over half of those participants being from out of town or out of state.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs long as I\u2019ve been a club officer, this has been the biggest seminar we\u2019ve had due to COVID and other reasons,\u201d Vice President of the FHSU Aikido Club Kaiden O\u2019Dell said. \u201cIt\u2019s great to see all the people here.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These semester seminars are completely free to attend and no experience is required.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSeminars like this can cost upward of 250 dollars and our club puts it on completely free thanks to generous funding from the university,\u201d Sanford said. \u201cIt\u2019s a great way to jump in and is very fun.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trying Aikido can also be a way to supplement a regular workout or gym session.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t like doing a lot of cardio,\u201d O\u2019Dell said. \u201cAikido helped with getting that physical activity in, but you\u2019re doing something with a purpose and applying your body in unique ways as opposed to just running on a treadmill or lifting weights.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next seminar will be held in September and marks 20 years for the Fort Hays Aikido Club and 10 years for the Aikido of Northwest Kansas.
