{"id":63557,"date":"2022-02-22T08:35:59","date_gmt":"2022-02-22T14:35:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=63557"},"modified":"2022-02-22T08:38:04","modified_gmt":"2022-02-22T14:38:04","slug":"usd-489-board-meeting-discusses-bond-repairs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=63557","title":{"rendered":"USD 489 board meeting discusses bond, repairs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>BY ALICIA FEYERFERM<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The USD 489 Board of Education met for their regular meeting on Monday.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Board opened the meeting with the approval of the previous meeting\u2019s minutes, HRC agenda and minutes, personnel transactions, the 2022-2023 district calendar and the February financials.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>District Nursing Staff members Mary Ann Shorman, Lottie Porsi and Alaina Cunningham were recognized for their service of providing early morning COVID tests to students, staff and families, as well as helping with COVID vaccine and booster drives. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know it took a great deal of your time to help with these important things but because of your efforts many people benefitted from your service,\u201d Superintendent Ron Wilson said. \u201cOn behalf of USD 489, we would like to thank all of you and let you know how much you are truly appreciated.\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>USD 489 parent Julie Eikenberry spoke during public comment asking for clarification about the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=63499\">ransomware attack at Hays High School.<\/a><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe did have a disruption to our system and we did send out a message,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cWe\u2019re going through a process to investigate this and as soon as we can have more information to update we will be doing that.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During Wilson\u2019s superintendent report, he encouraged individuals to look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usd489.com\/page\/usd-489-bond\">USD 489 Bond website<\/a> and review the information before the vote on May 10. Tours will be set up for community members to view the schools ahead of the vote.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Board approved a base bid for repair and maintenance for the Hays Middle School track. Wilson noted the appraiser said the middle school track was one of the worst he\u2019d ever seen. These improvements will prolong the life of the track by seven to nine years.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wilson said this was a good investment, even if the bond passes and the middle school becomes the new elementary.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a good idea for several reasons,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cOne is, we\u2019ll be utilizing that track for three more years because that\u2019s the timeline of how the bond may work. We\u2019re utilizing it, but it\u2019s really not even probably usable at this point.
