KEARNEY, Neb. – The Fort Hays State wrestling team was unable to overcome early deficits in both duals at the Midwest Duals in Kearney on Saturday (Jan. 22). The Tigers (3-5) fell to No. 14 Adams State 30-15 before suffering a narrow defeat against Western Colorado, 23-19. 8th-ranked Marty Verhaeghe<\/a> (184 pounds) and No. 12 Tereus Henry<\/a> (197 pounds) both won a pair of matches on the day.

The Tigers fell behind early against Adams State, with the Grizzlies winning the first seven matchups. FHSU grabbed some momentum going into the second dual of the day with wins in the final three bouts after Verhaeghe got the Tigers on the board with a second-period pin. Henry followed with a 7-3 decision before Tony Caldwell<\/a> pinned his opponent in just 43 seconds.

Tom VanValkenburg<\/a> got things going a little quicker for the Tigers in the second match with a second-round pin at 133 pounds, tying things up at 6-6 after an FHSU forfeit at 125 pounds. The Mountaineers won the next two weights with a major decision and a decision putting the Mountaineers up 13-6. Anthony Scantlin<\/a> put the Tigers within four with a 2-0 decision at 157 pounds, but the Mountaineers took the next two matches with a major decision and a pin to go up 23-9. The Tigers fought back once again with wins in the final three matches, including a 4-3 decision for Verhaeghe, a 10-1 major decision from Henry and a 2-0 decision from A.J. Cooper<\/a>. But the rally came up just a few points short, with Western winning 23-19.

The Tigers will be back in action Thursday (Jan. 27) when they take on No. 24 Newman in Wichita for their first conference dual of the season beginning at 7 p.m.
