KEARNEY, Neb. – Fort Hays State Wrestling competed in the Younes Hospitality Open on Saturday (Nov. 20). Out of the 11 wrestlers competing for the Tigers, Marty Verhaeghe<\/a> (Elite 184) and A.J. Cooper<\/a> (Elite 285) placed in their respective weight classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verhaeghe\nfinished in third place in the Elite 184 bracket. He started off the day with\nwins by major decision 16-5 and sudden victory takedown 9-7, but then fell to\nNo. 3 ranked Austin Eldredge from Nebraska-Kearney by decision, 9-6, in the\nsemifinals. Verhaeghe found is way to the consolation finals with a win by fall\nin 6:30 and wrapped the day with a 3-2 decision over Calvin Sund from Air Force\nto win the consolation side of the bracket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After\nmaking it through to the championship semifinals, Cooper finished fifth in the\nElite 285 bracket. He won his first three matches by decision 4-2, technical\nfall 15-0, and a 5-4 decision. In the semis, Cooper was pinned in 4:38. He\nfaced No. 6 ranked Lee Herrington from Nebraska-Kearney was pinned in 1:36.\nCooper finished in fifth place after Jayson Davis from CSU-Pueblo had to\nmedically forfeit.

\nBroderick\nGreen<\/a> (Elite 125) and Tony\nCaldwell<\/a> (Elite 285) both won a pair of matches on the day,\ngoing 2-2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nTigers will be back in action on Saturday (Dec. 4) when they travel to Crete,\nNeb. for the Conner\/Oppenheim Doane Open. Action will begin at 9 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
