{"id":61898,"date":"2021-11-04T16:16:34","date_gmt":"2021-11-04T21:16:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=61898"},"modified":"2021-11-04T16:16:36","modified_gmt":"2021-11-04T21:16:36","slug":"new-music-festival-on-tap-at-fort-hays-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=61898","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;New Music Festival\u2019 on tap at Fort Hays State"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By UNIVERSITY RELATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fourth annual New Music Festival, presented by Fort Hays State University\u2019s Department of Music and Theatre, will be held on Friday, Nov. 12, and Saturday, Nov. 13. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Comprised of FHSU music faculty who share a\npassion for the music of living composers, the New Music Ensemble commissions\ncomposers to bring new and exciting works to Hays. These composers in residence\nwork with FHSU composition students and present a lecture to faculty, students,\nand community members. They also rehearse with the ensemble on a brand-new work\nto premiere at the festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s exciting to have a work written\nspecifically for our ensemble, and our audience members will be the first\npeople in the world to hear it,\u201d said Dr. Kristin Pisano, associate professor\nof music and director of the New Music Festival at FHSU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pisano said that past works commissioned by\nFHSU have since been performed at other universities and national conferences,\nbringing recognition to Fort Hays State and its music department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s composer in residence will be Dr.\nStephen Andrew Taylor, a professor of composition at the University of Illinois\nat Urbana-Champaign. He has composed <em>Piranesi<\/em>\nfor flute and piano, his new work that will be premiered at the festival\u2019s\nevening concert. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The culminating event of the festival, \u201cAn\nEvening of the Music of Dr. Stephen Andrew Taylor,\u201d will begin at 7:30 p.m.\nSaturday in Sheridan Hall\u2019s Beach\/Schmidt Performing Arts Center. A reception\nwill follow in the lobby. Tickets are free to the public and will be available\nat the door or beforehand at the Hays Convention and Visitor\u2019s Bureau, 2700\nVine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concert will feature other works by Taylor,\nincluding two works for viola and electronics, a duo for flute and clarinet,\nand a video installation set to the scenario \u201cthe spirit of the universe takes\na journey.\u201d Taylor will also perform an original piano composition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taylor&nbsp;composes music that explores\nboundaries between art and science. One work on the evening program is Solaria,\na video created in collaboration with physicist Smitha Vishveshwara, who\nstudies black holes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pisano said that Vishveshwara is passionate\nabout the connections between science and art and that she and Taylor came up\nwith this scenario \u201cthe spirit of the solar system takes a journey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe 2021 New Music Festival will open the\nmusical ears of the Hays community and provide the audience with a uniquely\ndifferent musical experience,\u201d Pisano said.\n\nIn addition to the concert, Taylor will give a\nlecture at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the university\u2019s Malloy Hall 115.
