{"id":61455,"date":"2021-10-08T13:38:01","date_gmt":"2021-10-08T18:38:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=61455"},"modified":"2021-10-12T08:45:34","modified_gmt":"2021-10-12T13:45:34","slug":"local-organizations-honor-domestic-violence-awareness-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=61455","title":{"rendered":"Local Organizations honor Domestic Violence Awareness Month"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>BY RAEGAN NEUFELD<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In honor of October\u2019s Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Options Domestic and Sexual Violence Services partnered with downtown businesses in Hays to bring awareness to the victims and survivors of domestic violence through purple lights.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Options is a service for victims of not only domestic violence, but also sexual assault, stalking, dating violence, and human trafficking. The organization has locations in both Hays and Colby.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Downtown organizations host Purple Light Night to honor domestic violence awareness\" width=\"790\" height=\"444\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SDkmNi8bA_Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, Options provided purple lights to the hair salons in Hays to display in their windows. Salons were chosen specifically because of a program called Cut It Out. Cut It Out helps train hairdressers to recognize the signs of abuse in clients.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s an intimate relationship,\u201d Options Director of Development Dawn Gabel said. \u201cPeople are likely to share when getting their hair done. Sometimes when talking about their days, things come out during the conversation. Beauticians and barbers need to know what to do in that situation in order to help.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabel also explained that the lights in the windows are a way for salons to tell clients that they are in a safe place.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was the first year that the window displays were organized. The salons that took part included Park Avenue Salon, Hays Academy of Hair Design, Brick House Day Spa, J Studio, Emerald Image, Desbien Design, Salon Ten O Seven, and Salon MUAH. So if anyone would like a purple light bulb for their porch, just contact Options,\u201d Gabel said.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tree lighting took place on Thursday night. Hecker and Gabel both spoke at the beginning of the ceremony, as did Kaiti Dinges, the executive director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.janascampaign.org\/about-us.html\">Jana\u2019s Campaign<\/a>.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hecker in particular spoke about ways to help survivors heal.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re asking all the wrong questions,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Hecker, the questions that survivors are commonly asked tend to place blame on them, not the abusers. Questions such as, \u201cif it was so bad, why didn\u2019t they leave?\u201d Or, \u201cIf it was so bad, why did they go back?\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t do that to robbery victims,\u201d she pointed out.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Hecker left her audience with a challenge.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a community, we can definitely do something about that by learning to ask the right questions. Bring that advocacy to the next level. Questions that are rooted in love and kindness are the questions that will be answered and really create safety and long-term healing for survivors,\u201d Hecker said. \u201cThat is how we change the conversation in this country.
