GARDEN CITY, Kan. \u2013 Fort Hays State University and Garden City Community College have a long tradition of working together to ensure student success. FHSU administrators will gather on the GCCC campus on Tuesday, Sept. 28, to celebrate their latest partnership \u2013 opening a new location for the FHSU Transfer Center at GCCC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\n1:30 p.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony will be part of an open house and information\nday at the transfer center, and the popular Transfer\nConnect Program (TCP). TCP is a dual advising relationship where prospective\ncommunity college graduates have access to FHSU transfer success coaches, who\nproactively engage with their assigned students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previously housed in the FHSU Higher Education Opportunity Center,\nthe transfer center moved to the GCCC campus this past summer, making it more\naccessible for students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FHSU President Tisa Mason will be on hand for the ribbon-cutting\nfor the center\u2019s new location in the Thomas S. Staffel Library. As part of the\ncelebration, the application fee will be waived for students from Garden City\nor attending GCCC \u2013 both on campus and online \u2013 who fill out transfer paperwork\nduring the open house and information day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are excited to enhance our transfer relationship with students\nin the Garden City area,\u201d Dr. Mason said. \u201cOur enduring partnership with Garden\nCity Community College strengthens our collective impact. We continue to remove\nbarriers for students as we help them succeed, understanding that also is\nsuccess for the community \u2013 and the region.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GCCC President Dr. Ryan Ruda, who coincidentally is a Fort Hays\nState alum, will also attend the ribbon-cutting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHistorically, Fort Hays State\nUniversity is the top choice for GCCC students to transfer into,\u201d Ruda said.\n\u201cOur students greatly benefit from having the FHSU Transfer Center housed on\nour campus. GCCC is proud of the continued collaboration and partnership with\nFHSU.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruda\u2019s passion for his alma mater is evident, says FHSU\u2019s\nMercedes Ramos, manager of the transfer center at Garden City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPresident Ruda knows how beneficial these partnerships are for\nour students,\u201d Ramos said. \u201cGCCC has really opened its doors to us, and its\npresident is a great advocate for Fort Hays State. This has been a great move\nto campus, where we already have seen a lot more student traffic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ramos and Judy Espino, a transfer success coach, are looking\nforward to helping more students than ever before. According to Kansas Board of\nRegents statistics, more GCCC graduates transfer to Fort Hays State to continue\ntheir education than to any of the five other KBOR universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ramos and Espino are available at the center to answer students\u2019\nquestions, from how to fill out the FAFSA or residential applications to\nscheduling a campus visit to FHSU \u2013 and anything in-between that will help\ncreate a seamless transfer process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a great resource to learn what to do when transferring,\nwhich can sometimes be scary,\u201d Ramos said. \u201cWe look forward to helping students\nmaneuver through this process.
