{"id":60956,"date":"2021-09-13T14:55:42","date_gmt":"2021-09-13T19:55:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=60956"},"modified":"2021-09-13T14:55:43","modified_gmt":"2021-09-13T19:55:43","slug":"hays-city-commission-approves-2022-budget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=60956","title":{"rendered":"Hays City Commission approves 2022 budget"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>BY CORIE LYNN<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hays City Commission met Thursday to discuss the City\u2019s 2022 budget.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presented by Assistant City Manager Collin Bielser, this budget outlined general fund, levied fund, utilities and miscellaneous fund.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The budget he presented was balanced and saw the mills rate remaining flat for the 13th consecutive year.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The budget also included a change established by a Senate bill passed earlier in the year.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt eliminated the tax lid and introduced the \u2018Revenue Neutral Rate\u2019 and adjusted the budget approval timeline,\u201d Bielser said.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The commissioners passed the budget, and each complimented the City of Hays staff for their work on putting together a clear budget.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKudos to the City,\u201d Commissioner Ron Mellick said. \u201cWe\u2019ve worked hard, we\u2019ve planned hard and that\u2019s why we\u2019re at where we are today.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the presentation of the budget, the commissioners heard from Sarah Wasinger, president and CEO of the Hays Chamber.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wasinger spoke that evening to inform the commissioners that the Chamber is aware of the lack of childcare services affecting Ellis County.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere was a point-in-time survey conducted this year that indicated that we\u2019ve lost 16 childcare facilities in Ellis County since 2019,\u201d she said.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Wasinger, quality childcare services will allow more people to join the workforce, aiding businesses. She and the Chamber are working to create a taskforce to address the issue.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following Wasinger, City of Hays Project Manager John Braun presented an update on the North Vine Street Corridor Project.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The construction project is in its fourth and final phase as the construction crew install center islands and splitter medians. Braun projects the roadwork to be completed in November.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe last piece of the construction puzzle,\u201d he said, \u201cwill be to go back to 35th and Vine St. there by Hickcock\u2019s and Arby\u2019s and to construct the median island, the splitter that will convert that intersection into a three-quarter intersection[.]\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To complete the evening\u2019s agenda, the commissioners passed an award of bid for the Parks Department parking lot resurfacing, the 2021 Uniform Public Offense Code and Standard Traffic Ordinances and the rezoning of 210 W 13th.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hays City Commission will reconvene Sep. 23.<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY CORIE LYNN The Hays City Commission met Thursday to discuss the City\u2019s 2022 budget.
