Dr. Ivalah Allen is \u201cthrilled\u201d to announce the 74th annual High Plains Music Camp at Fort Hays State University will be in person after having to hold the 2020 version virtually because of the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was holding my breath until we\nlearned in late March that we had the go-ahead,\u201d said Allen, associate\nprofessor of music and theatre director of the camp. \u201cWe are excited to have\nthese young musicians back on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dates for the camp \u2013 which include\ninstruction for middle and high school students in band, orchestra, and vocal \u2013\nare July 11-17. Registration for a residential, full-time camp participant is\n$450, which includes lodging and meals. The cost for day participants is $250.\nAll participants receive quality instruction, a drawstring cinch bag, and a\nT-shirt. Registration is encouraged by June 15. After that date, a $100 late\nfee will be added to the camp fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There will be sessions for middle school\nband and four areas of instruction featuring high school students \u2013 band, jazz\nband, orchestra, and vocal. The only section that will not be held this year is\nmiddle school orchestra because of low early enrollment and lack of enough\norchestra staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nightly performances at Beach\/Schmidt\nPerforming Arts Center in Sheridan Hall will include a visit by the Kansas\n135th Infantry Band from Fort Riley Tuesday. Those performances, set for 7 p.m.\nMonday through Thursday, are all open and free to the public. Jazz band\nperformances begin at 6 p.m. Friday. There also will be a musical at 6 p.m.\nFriday in Felten-Start Theatre in Malloy Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The camp, one of a kind in Kansas, is an\nopportunity to learn from nationally recognized musicians, teachers, and\nconductors. It also is an excellent recruiting tool for FHSU, and the camp\nannually is a training ground of sorts for current Fort Hays State students who\nserve as counselors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have a lot of music education\nstudents help at the camp,\u201d she said. \u201cWe like to get them involved as\ncounselors because this is the age group they are going to be working with as\nteachers when they graduate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a full week for the participants.\nAfter arriving on campus Sunday for registration, they audition for the various\nlevels of instruction. The counselors then begin tours of the campus, and\nensemble rehearsals begin following dinner Sunday evening. Following full days\nof instruction, the participants then are all involved \u2013 in one way or another\n\u2013 in the evening concerts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allen is looking forward to another\naction-packed week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
