The 16th annual John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activities Day (SACAD) was hosted virtually by Fort Hays State University the week of April 12-16, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SACAD\ncelebrates the research, scholarly and creative work conducted by varied\ndisciplines within the university. Special activities \u2013 including seminars,\nresearch presentations, and exhibits were provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nmain events included poster presentations and a creative works exhibition\nfeaturing student and faculty work from the College of Arts, Humanities, and\nSocial Sciences; the W.R. and Yvonne Robbins College of Business and\nEntrepreneurship; the College of Education; the College of Health and Behavioral\nSciences; and the Peter Werth College of Science, Technology, and Mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\npublic is invited to view the virtual event at https:\/\/symposium.foragerone.com\/fhsuscad<\/a>. More than 165 poster presentations,\ncreative works, and a special oral presentation are featured. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following awards were announced on\nApril 15 by FHSU President Tisa Mason and Student\nBody President Haley Reiter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leslie\nPaige, director of the Office of Scholarship and Sponsored Projects, said the\nday \u201cnot only showcases the significant work being conducted by faculty and\nstaff, but it also exemplifies the opportunities that FHSU students have to\nconduct research, engage in scholarship opportunities, and present creative\nworks with guidance from their faculty mentors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scholarly\nand creative activity encourages critical thinking, innovation, collaboration,\nand leadership, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFHSU\nsupports developing new areas of excellence in all disciplines as part of its\nmission to advance knowledge and further the economic growth of the state,\u201d\nPaige said. \u201cParticipation provides the opportunity to clarify academic and\nprofessional goals while promoting advancement in a particular field of study.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Named\nafter the late Dr. John Heinrichs, who championed research at FHSU, the\nScholarly and Creative Activities Day is sponsored by the FHSU Scholarship\nEnvironment Committee with support from the Office of the Provost, FHSU deans,\nthe Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science, the Graduate School, and the\nOffice of Scholarship and Sponsored Projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nexhibits and presentations are free and open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First place \u2013 Jerrad Watts, a Los Lunas,\nN.M., senior majoring in geosciences, \u201cWhat is in Big Creek? Water Analysis of\nBig Creek. Co-investigators were Devin P. Tracy an Independence, Mo., senior,\nand Dr. Henry Agbogun, assistant professor of geosciences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second place \u2013 Grady Hammer, a Wallace\nsenior majoring in agronomy, \u201cEffects of Cover Crops on Soil Quality.\u201d\nCo-investigator was William Cross, a Lewis senior, and research mentor was Dr.\nIryna McDonald, assistant professor of agriculture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third place \u2013 Jenna Howard, a WaKeeney\nsenior majoring in geosciences, \u201cStable Isotope Geochemistry of Various\nCarbonates.\u201d Co-investigators include Kaiden O\u2019Dell, a Salina senior majoring\nin geosciences; Riley Sanford, a Topeka senior majoring in geosciences; Matthew\nTuttle, a Scott City senior majoring in geosciences; and Jerrad Watts, a\nDadeville, Mo., senior majoring in geosciences; Hays graduate student Mitchell\nLukens, majoring in geosciences; and Dr. Jonathan Sumrall, assistant professor\nof geosciences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third place \u2013 Nicholas Wood, Charleston,\nIll., finance major, \u201cFactors Affecting the Rate of\nHomeownership in the United States.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Undergraduate \u2013 Non-Empirical <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

First place \u2013 Abigail Hays, a Baldwin\nCity junior majoring in Criminal Justice, \u201cMass\nshootings in the U.S.: Individual, community, and system responses.\u201d The\nco-investigator was Dr. April Terry, assistant professor of criminal justice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second place \u2013\nTaylor Barnett, a Colby junior majoring in Medical Diagnostic Imaging, \u201cThe Use\nof Intraoperative MRI for Neurosurgery.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third place \u2013\nGarrett McBlair, a Beloit senior majoring in Criminal Justice, \u201cServices for\nthe public servant: Assessing mental health stigma and agency resources for\nrural law enforcement personnel.\u201d The co-investigator was Dr. April Terry,\nassistant professor of criminal justice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Graduate \u2013 Empirical <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

First place \u2013 Mitchell Lukens, a\nPalacios, Texas, geosciences major, \u201cThe Life and\nTimes of Mosasaur Belle.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second place \u2013\nBenjamin Hoffhines, a Hutchinson psychology major, \u201cSocial Support Predicts\nSecure Adult Attachment Above and Beyond Parenting Styles.\u201d The co-investigaors\nwere Nicholas Davis, Norton sophomore majoring in political science; and Dr.\nWhitney Whitaker, assistant professor of psychology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third place \u2013 McKenzie\nCunningham, a Lesterville, Mo. communication major, and Kali Harvey a Concordia\nsenior majoring in psychology, \u201cFHSU Faculty Perceptions of Student Engagement\nand Communication During the COVID-19 Pandemic.\u201d The research mentors were Dr.\nRachel Dolechek, instructor of business education; Dr. Nuchelle Chance,\ninstructor of psychology; and Latisha Haag, faculty development training\nspecialist in teaching innovation and learning technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
