{"id":59136,"date":"2021-03-17T09:16:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-17T14:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=59136"},"modified":"2021-03-17T09:16:02","modified_gmt":"2021-03-17T14:16:02","slug":"paige-wins-4th-presidential-award-from-the-national-association-of-school-psychologists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=59136","title":{"rendered":"Paige wins 4th Presidential Award from the National Association of School Psychologists"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By UNIVERSITY RELATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fort Hays State University\u2019s Leslie Paige has won the Presidential Award from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) for the fourth time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paige, director of the Office of\nScholarships and Sponsored Projects at FHSU, was honored at last month\u2019s NASP\nannual convention for her exceptional service in the field of school\npsychology. The immediate past president of the professional organization,\nPaige has been an active member since 1979. She also won Presidential Awards in\n2001, 2007, and 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s convention was held online,\nand more than 9,000 were able to participate \u2013 the most ever in the 52-year\nhistory of the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a common practice for the reigning\npresident to honor several members with the presidential award for their work\nduring the previous year.&nbsp; While Paige\u2019s year as president ended in June\n2020, she has been busy with responsibilities as the immediate past president. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe first half of my year as president\nwas very typical,\u201d she said, \u201cand the second half was like building a plane\nwhile we were flying it, with the online pivot because of the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paige was surprised and honored when the\npresident of NASP contacted her before the official announcement during the\nconvention and told her about her award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NASP represents more than 25,000 school\npsychologists, graduate students, and related professionals throughout the\nUnited States and 25 other countries. It is the world\u2019s largest organization of\nschool psychologists and works to advance effective practices to improve\nstudents\u2019 learning, behavior, and mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paige said one of the most rewarding\naspects of her time as president was how everyone pulled together during the\npandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn a crisis, we can\u2019t be expected to do\nwork as usual. We have to be able to provide support for people,\u201d she said.\n\u201cFor years, a lot of graduate educator faculty and school psychology programs\nbelieved you can\u2019t teach psychology online. I have always thought, \u2018Yes you\ncan.\u2019 This spring, in an incredibly short amount of time, we were able to\ncontinue our advocacy work through webinars. It was the worst of times and the\nbest of times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paige has held other leadership\npositions on the NASP board of directors, including treasurer and secretary.\nShe has chaired and co-chaired numerous committees, including awards,\nleadership development, ethics, professional development, and publications. She\nhas also been a member of the PREPaRE School Crisis Prevention and Intervention\nTraining Curriculum workgroup and the Strategic Planning committees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During Paige\u2019s year serving as\npresident, the NASP launched several initiatives in the areas of social\njustice, equity, and diversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During her final few months as immediate\npast president, Paige will help complete ongoing initiatives. Beginning with\nthe organization\u2019s new year in June, Paige will begin serving as chair of\nNASP\u2019s Professional Growth Committee.
