The Center for Empowering Victims of Gender-based Violence is a regional hub of collaborative research and service, housed in the Department of Criminal Justice at Fort Hays State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\n2018, Dr. Ziwei Qi of Criminal Justice and Dr. Hsin-Yen Yang of Communication\nStudies were selected as entrepreneurship faculty fellows by the Robbins\nCollege of Business and Entrepreneurship and the Provost’s Office at Fort Hays\nState University. This fellowship supports Drs. Qi and Yang in pursuing their\ninnovative approaches in empowering survivors of gender-based violence from\nrural communities to gain economic independence and long-term security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drs.\nQi and Yang\u2019s initiative addressed the importance of social entrepreneurship,\nsafe housing, employment, counseling, and healthcare for survivors’ financial\nfreedom and social justice. With the support from the Departments of Criminal\nJustice, Communication Studies, Sociology, and Art and Design, in March 2020,\nthe Center for Empowering Victims of Gender-based Violence (CEVGV) was\nestablished and housed in the Department of Criminal Justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr.\nTamara Lynn, chair of the Department of Criminal Justice, became the Center’s\nthird co-founder alongside Drs. Qi and Yang. The Center recently welcomed four\nsenior research consultants, Dr. Christy Craig of Sociology and Drs. Morgan\nSteele and April Terry of Criminal Justice, and Dr. Rachel Dolechek of Applied\nBusiness Studies, who will provide research and policy recommendations on\ngender-based violence in the rural community. The Center also has two\nundergraduate research assistants, Brandi Hanson and Cristina Jimenez, and one\ngraduate research assistant, Viviana Lizarraga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nCenter for Empowering Victims of Gender-based Violence aims to reduce the constraints\nsurvivors face, promote freedom of economic independence, and empower survivors\nto pursue opportunities freely. It commits to providing sustainable support and\nimprovement to help survivors break the cycle of violence and transform\nthemselves from victims\/survivors to social entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nCenter facilitates cross-disciplinary research and collaborative networks\nresearchers use to apply evidence-based approaches and investigate best\npractices addressing gender-based violence in rural communities.\n\nThe Center establishes and develops\nacademic-community collaborations through service-learning, research,\nassessment, and educational opportunities and policy recommendations that\nenhance the well-being of rural communities.
