The Kansas Undergraduate Research Day, traditionally held at the State Capitol in Topeka, will be a virtual event this year. Fort Hays State University is the sponsor for the 2021 event, scheduled for March 2, 3, and 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Undergraduate students from each Kansas\nBoard of Regents (KBOR) four-year public university \u2013 including four from Fort\nHays State \u2013 are working on 40 different projects that will be presented on the\nevent website at http:\/\/ltblogs.fhsu.edu\/urd2021\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Undergraduate Research Days is an\nopportunity for our state legislators and other guests to visit the website and\nsee first-hand the quality of research in which undergraduates across Kansas\nare engaged,” said Leslie Paige, research and scholarship coordinator for\nFHSU\u2019s Office of Scholarship and Sponsored Projects, and the coordinator of\nthis year\u2019s event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kansas Undergraduate Research Day\nwebsite will feature posters and accompanying student videos describing the\nresearch projects. Visitors will be able to comment and post questions for the\nstudent presenters. Students, faculty, KBOR members, state lawmakers, and\nmembers of the public from across the state are invited to participate. The\nevent\u2019s goals are to raise awareness of the research undergraduate students are\nconducting, and highlight the transformational educational opportunities\navailable to students at each KBOR university. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEven though we are unable to gather in\nthe Capitol rotunda as we have in the past, our decision to turn this into a\nvirtual event will allow more Kansans to see and hear how learning through\nresearch positively affects undergraduate students and how higher education\nstrengthens the Kansas economy and workforce,\u201d said Leslie Paige, FHSU Office\nof Scholarship and Sponsored Projects, the coordinator of this year\u2019s event.\n\u201cThese experiences enrich student education and better prepares them for future\ncareers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FHSU student research participants, in\nalphabetical order, include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abigail Hayes, Baldwin\nCity junior majoring in criminal justice, will present \u201cEffectiveness of Drug\nAbuse Treatments in Prison.\u201d Dr. Tamara Lynn, chair and associate professor of\ncriminal justice, served as the faculty research sponsor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cristina Jimenez, Dodge\nCity senior majoring in criminal justice, will present \u201cAn Overall Review on\nDomestic Violence and Criminal Justice Response in Rural Areas.\u201d Dr. Ziwei Qi,\nassistant professor of criminal justice, served as the faculty sponsor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mallory Benortham, Topeka\nsenior majoring in psychology, will present \u201cCOVID-19, Sex and Self\/Community\nProtection.\u201d Dr. Carol Patrick, professor of psychology, served as the faculty\nresearch sponsor.\n\nGrace Wasinger, Hays\nsenior majoring in psychology, will present \u201cEngaging with Constituents on\nTwitter: How Source Credibility and Formality of Language Interact to Influence\nPublic Reception.\u201d Brooke Mann, instructor of psychology, served as the faculty\nresearch sponsor\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
