The 12th-ranked Fort Hays State wrestling team recorded a pair of narrow losses in Saturday’s FHSU Dual Jamboree (Jan. 9). The Tigers (0-2) opened the season with a 24-21 loss to No. 10 Adams State (2-0) before wrapping up the day with a slim 22-21 loss to Colorado Mesa (2-2).

A.J. Cooper<\/a> went 2-0 on the day with a pair of first-period pins, with Mason Turner<\/a>, Cole Zebley<\/a>, Anthony Scantlin<\/a>, Marty Verhaeghe<\/a>, Aryus Jones<\/a> and Tereus Henry<\/a> also recording wins in dual action.

In action on a separate mat outside of the duals, Rhett Koppes<\/a>, Josh Lenker<\/a>, Cody Hicks<\/a> and LJ Flax<\/a> all came away with wins for the Tigers.

Fort Hays State is scheduled to return to action Thursday when they travel to Golden, Colo. for a dual against No. 16 Colorado School of Mines. Action is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Central Time (5 p.m. MT).

#10 Adams State 24, #12 Fort Hays State 21<\/strong>

The Tigers had a slow start to the day, dropping their first six bouts before rallying to take the final four matchups against Adams State. But the Grizzlies established enough of a lead early on to take the win, 24-21.

After falling behind 24-0, sixth-ranked Verhaeghe put the Tigers on the board with a 15-2 major decision over Cody Lewis at 174 pounds. The senior took the lead with a first period takedown and tacked on numerous points in the final period with two nearfalls.

No. 9 Jones kept things going with a third-period pin at 184 pounds. The Junction City, Kan. native recorded the only takedown of the bout in the third period before recording the pin at the 5:55 mark.

Redshirt-freshman Henry recorded a dominant 17-2 win in his first career dual at 197 pounds. Henry recorded a takedown and a four-point nearfall in the first period before compiling three takedowns and another four-point nearfall at the end of the second period to clinch the win.

10th-ranked Cooper kept the momentum going with a win in the final bout of the morning, tallying a first-period pin just 1:33 into the contest.

Colorado Mesa 22, #12 Fort Hays State 21<\/strong>
Fort Hays State came up just short in a back-and-forth matchup against Colorado Mesa, 22-21. The Mavericks took an early 3-0 lead before second-ranked Turner put the Tigers on the board with a pin just 43 seconds into the 133-pound bout.

An illegal move in the 149-pound matchup handed Zebley a win via disqualification, putting the Tigers in front 12-6.

Scantlin followed with a come-from-behind win at 157 pounds, securing a third-period takedown and riding out the remainder of the clock to win with the ride time point, 6-5.

Colorado Mesa started its comeback at 165 pounds, winning the next four matches to secure the team victory. Cooper finished the day with another first-period pin, cleaning things up at the 2:08 mark.
