As a student teacher in a remote learning classroom this semester, it\u2019s not uncommon for Regina Anderson to spend time in front of her computer over the noon hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Friday\u2019s screen time will be\ndifferent for this non-traditional student from Wichita. Anderson will be\nwatching Fort Hays State University\u2019s virtual commencement ceremony, anxious to\nhear her name called as a recipient of a master\u2019s degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s the third FHSU online degree in six\nyears for Anderson, who first earned an associate\u2019s and bachelor\u2019s in general\nstudies before pursuing her master of science in education (MSE) with an\nemphasis in elementary education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of the COVID-19\npandemic, Fort Hays State\u2019s traditional, in-person fall commencement ceremony\nwas converted into a series of smaller, college-specific virtual ceremonies.\nThe College of Education\u2019s ceremony is set for noon on the official Fort Hays State Facebook page<\/strong><\/a> and on the Tiger Media Network w<\/strong>ebsite<\/a>, and Anderson will be\nwatching. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s been a long time coming, but\nAnderson said it\u2019s been worth the effort taking classes at her pace, and\nonline, while raising three children and working as a preschool teacher and a\nsubstitute teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anderson said taking classes online,\nworking around her children\u2019s school activities, was \u201cperfect\u201d for her and that\nit has been a positive experience for her entire family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe kids are super excited for me, and\nI think this is setting a great example for them,\u201d she said. \u201cThey saw me\nstruggle trying to balance my \u2018mom\u2019 life, school and their activities. They saw\nthat persistence and hard work pays off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anderson first learned from a friend\nabout FHSU\u2019s online programs not long after she and her family moved to Wichita\nfrom Arizona back in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She checked it out and \u201cslowly, but\nsurely, I kept taking classes and continued my journey,\u201d she said. The more\nAnderson became involved with FHSU Online, the more she was impressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEveryone at Fort Hays State kept going\nabove and beyond,\u201d she said. \u201cThey were always asking if there was anything I\nneeded and giving me phone numbers for support if I needed anything. If this\nprogram didn\u2019t exist, I would not have my degree. Being able to take classes\nonline and be motivated by great teachers to keep going was key.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anderson said she also received a lot of\nencouragement and direction from Scott Gregory, director of field experiences\nfor the College of Education, who is in charge of student teaching programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe really connects with people and does\na lot of student support,\u201d Anderson said. \u201cI feel like he really listens to\nstudents and what they need to succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anderson plans to substitute teach\nduring the spring semester with hopes of an elementary education position in\nthe Wichita school district opening for the 2021-22 school year. All the while,\nshe said she continues to encourage other non-traditional students to pursue a\ndegree.\n\n\u201cIt\u2019s never too late to work on your degree, and\nFHSU has a great online program,\u201d she said. \u201cI tell them to take one class at a\ntime if they have to, and they will eventually get there. It\u2019s not how long it\ntakes you, it\u2019s where you end up.\u201d\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
