A Fort Hays State University professor was recently honored for his work to promote mental health for military veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Seth Kastle, assistant professor of\nLeadership Studies and a retired Army first sergeant, won the 2020 Max Gabriel\nVeterans Mental Health Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness\n(NAMI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each year, NAMI recognizes individuals\nand organizations that advance NAMI\u2019s mission to improve the lives of people\naffected by mental illness. The Max Gabriel Award recognizes a veteran who has\ndemonstrated outstanding commitment to the mental health needs of other\nveterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kastle was honored because of his\nchildren\u2019s book, \u201cWhy Is Dad So Mad?\u201d and its sequel, \u201c’Why\nIs Mom So Mad?\u201d and subsequent speaking engagements after the books were\npublished in 2016. The books focus on explaining to children why their parents\nact the way they do when struggling with Combat Related Post-Traumatic Stress\nDisorder and its symptoms. The second book was co-authored by Kastle\u2019s wife,\nJulia, also a combat veteran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBeing selected for the Max Gabriel\nVeterans Mental Health Award means a great deal to me. NAMI is an amazing\norganization, and to be recognized by them as a leader in the effort to improve\nthe mental health of our veterans is extremely humbling,\u201d Kastle said. \u201cI feel\nlike it is the responsibility of every veteran to give back to our brothers and\nsisters in arms. We are a tight-knit community \u2013 taking care of each other is\nour foundation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
