During this time of social distancing for visitors and less opportunity for school-age students to travel, Fort Hays State University\u2019s Kansas Wetlands Education Center has created a virtual tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tour, where one can experience\nCheyenne Bottoms from the comfort of your home or classroom, is available on\nthe recently revamped KWEC website at wetlandscenter.fhsu.edu<\/a>. It is comprised of 360 images, drone\nfootage, educational videos, interviews with key Cheyenne Bottoms partners and\ninteractive games. The use of drones in the Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area and\nthe Nature Conservancy Preserve require special permission, and the drone\nfootage was provided by Joseph Kern, executive director of Ad Astra Educational\nResearch and Outreach, LTD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While it can’t replace an in-person\nvisit to Cheyenne Bottoms, the drone footage and 360 images place you into the\nwetland. Visitors will experience birds, gain an understanding of the magnitude\nof the 41,000-acre freshwater marsh and learn why it is important to protect\nthis natural resource. The Kansas Department of Wildlife Parks and Tourism\nmanages 19,857 of those acres and the Nature Conservancy, almost 8,000 acres.\nBoth areas are represented and showcased in the virtual tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The website will feature recent bird\nsightings, upcoming events, and online programs and videos that have been\ndeveloped by KWEC educators during this pandemic. A bingo board is also\navailable on the website to help guide visitors to a variety of activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The KWEC is part of a nation-wide\nresearch collaborative, researching the effectiveness of virtual environmental\neducation programs and is looking for teachers grade 6-12 that would have their\nstudents complete the virtual tour and take a survey. The KWEC also has a program\nthat can be scheduled through Zoom, teaching about wetland types and\nproperties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teachers interested in having students\nprovide data for the Collaborative Evidence-Based Learning Network for\nImproving Environmental Education Distance Learning through Virginia Tech and\nClemson University should contact Mandy Kern at amkern2@fhsu.edu<\/a> or 1-877-243-9268 by December 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
