{"id":56740,"date":"2020-10-19T19:37:02","date_gmt":"2020-10-20T00:37:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=56740"},"modified":"2020-10-19T19:37:04","modified_gmt":"2020-10-20T00:37:04","slug":"potential-legal-action-halts-voting-in-ellis-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=56740","title":{"rendered":"Potential legal action halts voting in Ellis County"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BRAD DeMERS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents of\nEllis County were surprised during the weekend when they received their\nabsentee ballots with an error. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 4,000\nresidents received a ballot that had them choose a candidate \u201cFor United States\nSenator 40<sup>th<\/sup> District.\u201d The ballots should have read: \u201cFor State\nSenator 40th District.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a costly\nmistake as the Ellis County Clerk\u2019s office halted in-person advance voting to\nfix the error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the U.S.\nSenate race, Ellis County residents can vote between Republican Roger Marshall\nand Democrat Barbara Bollier. The Kansas Senate 40<sup>th<\/sup> District race\nis between Republican Rick Billinger and Democrat Larry Dreiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With no immediate\ninformation given about halting in-person voting, TMN contacted the Election Department\nunder the Secretary of State on Monday afternoon. An official in the department\nsaid potential legal action halted in-person advanced voting Monday and that\nthe Clerk\u2019s office was consulting its legal counsel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The official also\nconfirmed that all ballots will be counted with or without the error. Residents\nshould feel safe and free to submit an absentee ballot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TMN also pressed\nif Ellis County is required to allow more time for advanced voting due to the\nerror. The official stated that Ellis County is in accordance with state law.\nThe law requires counties to open advance in-person voting one week before the\nelection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday\nevening, the Ellis County Commission met to discuss county business. During the\nmeeting, County Clerk Donna Maskus told the commissioners there was an error\nand that the provider the county uses to make the ballots will be fixing the\nerror and sending her office new ballots. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also stated that all advanced voting in person will be halted until Thursday. On Thursday, new temporary hours will go into effect to accommodate the mishap.
