{"id":56425,"date":"2020-09-24T09:05:15","date_gmt":"2020-09-24T14:05:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=56425"},"modified":"2020-09-24T09:05:17","modified_gmt":"2020-09-24T14:05:17","slug":"%ef%bb%bfellis-county-health-department-fhsu-joint-release-on-flu-shot-programs-in-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=56425","title":{"rendered":"\ufeffEllis County Health Department, FHSU joint release on flu shot programs in county"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By UNIVERSITY RELATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ellis County Health Department and Fort Hays State University announced today they are making flu shots available to the people of Ellis County and the FHSU university communities they serve. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe COVID-19 pandemic remains a\ntremendous threat to our community, so it is absolutely essential that everyone\nin our community take a proactive step to ensure that Influenza doesn\u2019t add to\nthe burden on our local health resource,\u201d said Ellis County Health Director Jason\nKennedy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/prevent\/keyfacts.htm\">Centers for Disease Control\nand Prevention<\/a>,&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInfluenza is a potentially serious disease that can\nlead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. Every flu season is\ndifferent, and influenza infection can affect people differently, but millions\nof people get flu every year, hundreds of thousands of people are hospitalized\nand thousands to tens of thousands of people die from flu-related causes every\nyear. An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to help protect against\nflu. Vaccination has been shown to have many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/prevent\/keyfacts.htm#benefits\">benefits<\/a> including reducing the risk of flu illnesses,\nhospitalizations and even the risk of flu-related death in children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Flu Shots for Residents of\nEllis County&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ellis County Health Department\nwill offer flu shots beginning on October 1. Residents are asked to call\n785.628.9440 and make an appointment for their flu shot. The Ellis County\nHealth Department is open Monday through Thursday between the hours of 7:00\na.m. and 5:00 p.m. The office is closed each day between Noon and 1:00 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HaysMed, part of The University of\nKansas Health System, will host the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haysmed.com\/drive-thru-flu-shots-available-september-27-at-haysmed\/\">HaysMed\nDrive-Thru Flu Shot clinic<\/a> on Sunday, September\n27. The event, which will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., will offer free flu shots\nfor all residents older than 6 months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People age 10 and up can receive\ntheir free flu shot without leaving their vehicles and HaysMed volunteers will\ndirect traffic during the event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children 6 months through 9 years\nof age will be vaccinated on the west side of the Center for Health\nImprovement. Adults attending with children can also receive their shots in the\nsame location. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 100 volunteers will be\non hand to help with the event. HaysMed partners with Fort Hays State\nUniversity and North Central Kansas Technical College as both facilities\nprovide students to help with the shots. The event is sponsored by the Hays\nMedical Center Foundation. While there is no cost for flu shots, participants\nare asked to bring a canned food item to benefit the Community Assistance\nCenter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The flu vaccine also is available\nat HaysMed clinics for patients who are unable to attend the drive-thru flu\nshot event. Charges will apply at regular clinic visits, though the vaccine is\ncovered by most health insurance plans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Flu Shots on the campus of Fort\nHays State<\/strong> <strong>University <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fort Hays State University\u2019s flu\nshot program will begin on September 24.&nbsp;Students, faculty and staff are\nencouraged to get vaccinated for the 2020-2021 flu season at one of seven\nupcoming Flu Clinic Events.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These events have been organized\nas part of a joint initiative between the Human Resources Department and the\nDepartment of Nursing and the Student Health Center.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dates, times and locations of\nthe events are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<table class=\"wp-block-table\"><tbody><tr><td>\n  Thursday, September 24\n  <\/td><td>\n  9:00am &#8211; Noon\n  <\/td><td>\n  Memorial Union Ballroom\n  <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\n  Wednesday, September 30\n  <\/td><td>\n  3:00pm &#8211; 6:00pm\n  <\/td><td>\n  Memorial Union Ballroom\n  <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\n  Tuesday, October 6&nbsp;\n  <\/td><td>\n  7:30am &#8211; 10:30am\n  <\/td><td>\n  Memorial Union Stouffer Lounge\n  <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\n  Tuesday, October 6\n  <\/td><td>\n  3:00pm &#8211; 5:30pm\n  <\/td><td>\n  Memorial Union Stouffer Lounge\n  <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\n  Monday, October 19\n  <\/td><td>\n  2:00pm &#8211; 5:00pm\n  <\/td><td>\n  Memorial Union Black &amp; Gold\n  Room\n  <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\n  Wednesday October 28\n  <\/td><td>\n  7:30am &#8211; 10:30am\n  <\/td><td>\n  Memorial Union Ballroom\n  <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\n  Wednesday, November 11\n  <\/td><td>\n  2:00pm &#8211; 5:00pm\n  <\/td><td>\n  Memorial Union Black &amp; Gold\n  Room\n  <\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\n\n\n\n<p>For members of the campus\ncommunity who are unable to attend one of the seven Flu Clinic events, flu\nshots will be available at certain times in the Student Health Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because Student Health Center\nstaff are currently dealing with COVID-19 testing and patient care,\nappointments for a flu shot must be scheduled.&nbsp;Members of the FHSU campus\ncommunity are asked to make an appointment online using <a href=\"https:\/\/tigertracks.fhsu.edu\/TigerTracks\/\">Tiger Tracks<\/a>. The flu vaccine is offered at no cost to all FHSU\nstudents.
