The event is sponsored by the Robert E. and Patricia A. Schmidt Family Foundation, and will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, in the Fort Hays State University Memorial Union Ballroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no cost to attend and all\nare welcome. However, to reserve a meal for the lunch session, guests must RSVP\nto <a href=\"mailto:kaley.conner@hpmhc.com\">kaley.conner@hpmhc.com<\/a> by Jan. 24. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guest speakers will include Chuck\nIngoglia, CEO of the National Council for Behavioral Health, based in\nWashington, DC. Chuck will provide an update on public policy and discuss the\nimportance of reducing the stigma around mental illness. Kimberly Nelson,\nregional administrator with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services\nAdministration, will discuss farm and rural behavioral health policy\nconsiderations. Mykel Taylor, an associate professor of agricultural economics\nat Kansas State University, will provide an overview of the current agriculture\neconomy in rural Kansas. There also will be panel discussions featuring\nNorthwest Kansas legislators, agriculture experts, local farm families, and\nmore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event is intended to\nde-stigmatize mental illness and increase public awareness about warning signs,\nstress management and increased challenges facing many in rural Kansas, said\nWalt Hill, executive director of High Plains. The suicide rate in Kansas has\nincreased 45 percent in the last 17 years, with rural areas particularly\naffected. The need for mental health services has also increased, with many\nreporting high levels of stress or anxiety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s long been understood that\nfarming is an exceptionally stressful occupation, due to so many factors beyond\nthe farmer\u2019s control: Climate, economy, business costs,\u201d Hill said. \u201cIt\u2019s\nimportant to understand the farmer is the business\u2019 most valuable resource, and\nto reduce stigma that can be a barrier to seeking health care or just talking\nto someone, especially in a rural setting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>High Plains Mental Health Center<\/strong> is a licensed community mental health center dedicated to\nthe aggressive pursuit of providing a comprehensive mental health program to\nthe residents of Northwest Kansas. Embodied in this pursuit are fundamental\nprinciples of establishing quality services as close to home as possible, at an\naffordable fee, and delivered in the least disruptive manner available.
