{"id":47041,"date":"2019-09-06T15:24:26","date_gmt":"2019-09-06T20:24:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=47041"},"modified":"2019-09-06T15:24:30","modified_gmt":"2019-09-06T20:24:30","slug":"%ef%bb%bfkwec-offers-world-shorebirds-day-program-to-area-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=47041","title":{"rendered":"\ufeffKWEC offers &#8216;World Shorebirds Day&#8217; program to area students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By UNIVERSITY RELATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fort Hays State University\u2019s Kansas Wetlands Education Center has partnered with The Nature Conservancy to offer a \u201cWorld Shorebirds Day\u201d program to area seventh-and-eighth grade students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mandy Kern,\nprogram specialist at the KWEC, began visiting schools at the end of August and\nwill continue through the end of next week. Visits were scheduled to Ellinwood\nMiddle School and St. Joseph Catholic School in Ellinwood, Central Kansas\nChristian Academy and Great Bend Middle School in Great Bend, Smoky Valley\nMiddle School in Lindsborg and Stafford Middle School in Stafford. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWorld\nShorebirds Day,\u201d celebrated annually on Sept. 6, was created to raise public\nawareness about the need to protect shorebirds and their habitat for ongoing\nshorebird research, monitoring and conservation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want youth\nto realize what an amazing gem and natural resource we have in Cheyenne\nBottoms,\u201d Kern said. \u201cThousands of shorebirds pass through each year and I\u2019m\nthankful The Nature Conservancy in Kansas, and especially Rob Penner, Cheyenne\nBottoms and Avian Programs Manager, provided me with the opportunity to impact\nover 520 area students.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program\ncovers shorebirds\u2019 migration and the importance of resting areas like the\nCheyenne Bottoms and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge. Students are introduced\nto a variety of shorebirds who migrate through the Cheyenne Bottoms, study\nmounts and sculpt various habitats shorebirds use during their migration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCheyenne\nBottoms is the largest interior marsh in the United States and it has been\ndesignated as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention.\nAs many as 500,000 shorebirds pass through Cheyenne Bottoms in years with\nfavorable habitat conditions,\u201d Kern said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teachers\nparticipating in the program received a tub of supplies including books, lesson\nplans, posters, field guides, a bird feeder, games and student hand-outs\ncourtesy of The Nature Conservancy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About The\nNature Conservancy<\/strong> <br>\nThe Nature\nConservancy is a global environmental nonprofit that works to conserve the\nlands and waters across the world. In Kansas, the nonprofit has permanently\nprotected 139,470 acres including five preserves open to the public. They\nmanage about 8,000 of the 41,000 acre Cheyenne Bottoms basin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About KWEC<\/strong>\n<br>\nThe KWEC partners\nwith many agencies including, Fort Hays State, the Kansas Department of\nWildlife and Parks, and The Nature Conservancy.
