{"id":45604,"date":"2019-05-06T16:14:56","date_gmt":"2019-05-06T21:14:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=45604"},"modified":"2019-05-06T16:15:00","modified_gmt":"2019-05-06T21:15:00","slug":"%ef%bb%bffhsus-dr-pauline-scott-students-present-at-national-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=45604","title":{"rendered":"\ufeffFHSU\u2019s Dr. Pauline Scott, students present at national conference"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By UNIVERSITY RELATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fort Hays State University\u2019s Dr. Pauline Scott, professor of English, and graduate students Stacie Rupp, Vanessa Schumacher and Karel Webster presented their research at the College English Association 2019 national conference in New Orleans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott\u2019s paper,\n\u201c\u2018Stars, hide your fires\u2019: Hallucinations and Hidden Things in the\nShakespeare\/Nesbo Macbeths,\u201d compares Shakespeare\u2019s classic play with a modern\nwork of noir fiction by Norwegian crime writer Jo Nesbo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\n16th-17th-century playwright, she says, produced work intended to honor a new\nking and at the same time warn him about the \u201ccorruptive potential of great\npower.\u201d Nesbo\u2019s work, though a \u201cdepiction of the hidden machinations of power\nwithin a polluted, economically bleak urban landscape,\u201d yet makes Shakespeare\u2019s\nwork \u201cmore relevant than ever.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rupp\u2019s\npresentation, \u201cOperating in the Dark: Blinding Consequences in Mary Shelley\u2019s\n\u2018Frankenstein,\u2019 \u201d is a study of Mary Shelley\u2019s \u201cFrankenstein.\u201d She finds in the\nnovel another story of the corruption of power. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Victor\nFrankenstein, having found a way to create life, is blind to the monstrous\nnature of his creature and thus \u201cis rendered powerless.\u201d The monster, however,\nrealizing its own power, \u201cbegins taking life rather than conceiving it.\u201d\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schumacher\u2019s\n\u201cOperating in the Dark: Literal and Figurative Blind Spots in Shakespeare\u2019s\n\u2018King Lear\u2019 \u201d focuses on themes of blindness, especially the physical blindness\nin the case of Gloucester and a failure of perception in Lear. Each, operating out\nof his own infirmity, makes tragic errors of trust and are led to doom. \n\nWebster\u2019s study of F. Scott Fitzgerald\u2019s classic\nAmerican novel \u201cThe Great Gatsby,\u201d \u201c\u2018Start Him?
