A unique feature of \u201cAsere\u201d is its performances of <em>Son <\/em>music. <em>Son<\/em> combines African rhythms with Spanish flavor. Gaining its\npopularity in Havana, <em>Son<\/em> later\nbecoming an inspiration for <em>salsa<\/em>\ndance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The audience was invited to dance along during a couple of numbers. Looking down from my seat in the balcony, it appeared that only a few people in the audience below felt bold enough to attempt the tricky <em>Guaguanco<\/em> rhythms of the final number, \u201cHabanera.\u201d The Afro-Cuban music style <em>Guaguanco<\/em>, began in dock areas of Havana and Matanzas, but was equally enjoyed from the balcony of Beach\/Schmidt Performing Arts Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was eye (and ear) opening to discover the intense rhythms\nof the many styles of Cuban music offered by \u201cAsere\u201d. The heartfelt vocals,\nlyrical strings and sweet trumpet melodies invited the audience to enjoy a\nglimpse of island culture that very few of us will ever experience in person. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This season\u2019s final Encore event will be April 16. \u201cJigjam: Live from Ireland,\u201d will bring \u201cI-grass,\u201d (Irish-influenced Bluegrass) to the FHSU campus.
