Alonso Barragan-Martinez,\nFHSU graduate student, will help individuals explore what makes the bugs around\nthe wetlands center so durable and why they are important. Learn about their\nlife cycles, how they survive the winter, and the differences between bugs,\nbeetles, flies, bees and butterflies. Pinned insects will be on display, and\nmicroscopes will be available for a more up-close experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBirds of\nColumbia,\u201d at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 10, is a photographic journey with\nprofessional photographer Bob Gress to one of the three most diverse countries\nfor birds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This program\nis a collaboration with the Shafter Art Gallery\u2019s show \u201cThe Connected World:\nBiodiversity in the Art of Carel Pieter Brest van Kempen,\u201d from March 8 through\nApril 20. The gallery is located on Barton Community College\u2019s Campus in Great\nBend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In \u201cFeather\nFun,\u201d on Sunday, March 10, and Tuesday, March 12, Katya Frank, FHSU graduate\nstudent, will help visitors discover the various types and purposes of\nfeathers. Activities include using and coloring in bird keys and matching stray\nfeathers to the correct species of bird. Participants will also learn how to\nproperly use binoculars for their own backyard bird identification experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visitors to\n\u201cGeotrooping\u201d on Monday, March 11, will use field guides to decipher clues to\nthe location of hidden treasure boxes on the nature trail. Mandy Kern, program\nspecialist, will show how to find the boxes using Global Positioning Systems\ntechnology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Treasure boxes\nwill highlight what makes Cheyenne Bottoms special. Visitors will receive a\nfield home guide to identify plant and animal species any time. Weather\nappropriate clothing is encouraged because the activity is outside. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHave a\nBatacular Day\u201d is on Thursday, March 14, and Sunday, March 17. Visitors can\nhang out at KWEC with Kristen Granstrom-Arndt, FHSU graduate student, and read\nsome neat bat facts, see real bat skins, and participate in fun activities that\nshow the unique role bats play in the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPlants on\nyour Plate,\u201d will be Friday, March 15, and Saturday, March 16. Visitors will\njoin Chelsea Hanson, FHSU graduate student, for snactivity time and learn what\nvegetables and fruits belong to different parts of a plant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All activities\nare free. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The KWEC is\nlocated 10 miles northeast of Great Bend along K-156 Highway at Cheyenne\nBottoms.
