{"id":42573,"date":"2018-12-04T14:00:24","date_gmt":"2018-12-04T20:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=42573"},"modified":"2018-12-04T14:00:24","modified_gmt":"2018-12-04T20:00:24","slug":"85000-children-under-the-age-of-five-have-starved-in-us-saudi-war-on-yemen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=42573","title":{"rendered":"85,000 Children Under the Age of Five Have Starved in US\/Saudi War on Yemen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">STORY BY AARON STRAIN<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia has recently been called into question after the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=41965\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, but absent from most discussions on Saudi Arabia\u2019s human rights violations is the most glaring example of them: their devastating involvement in the war on Yemen. Save the Children recently reported that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.savethechildren.org\/us\/about-us\/media-and-news\/2018-press-releases\/yemen-85000-children-may-have-died-from-starvation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">85,000 children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> under the age of 5 have died of starvation since the escalation of the war. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To add on top of the existing starvation toll, 14 million Yemeni people, half of Yemen\u2019s population, remain at risk of complete famine. Cholera, a deadly disease which can be controlled by proper sanitation practices and can be treated easily, has potentially infected <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emro.who.int\/yem\/yemen-news\/amidst-the-devastation-of-war-in-yemen-efforts-are-under-way-to-control-cholera.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">over a million Yemeni<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, with some five thousand new cases reported each day during rainy seasons, according to the World Health Organization. Saudi Arabia quickly took action in supporting the Yemeni government, and other countries took sides in reaction, including Iran supporting the predominantly Shia Houthis. However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2018\/11\/yemen-iran-saudi-arabia-houthis.html?via=recirc_recent\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the minimal influence Iran has<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on the Houthis is dwarfed by the United States joining the Saudi-led coalition, and silently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2016\/10\/10\/u-s-and-u-k-continue-to-actively-participate-in-saudi-war-crimes-targeting-of-yemeni-civilians\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">arming, refueling, and bombing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> since the start of Saudi involvement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">American-made cluster bombs, which are bombs that parachute down from a plane and deploy bomblets that scatter across the sky, were <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.clusterconvention.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">banned by a treaty of 120 countries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, with the US, Saudi Arabia, and Russia notably absent from the list of signatories. These bombs are nevertheless sold for hundreds of millions of dollars and are dropped regularly on Yemeni civilians. Drone strikes, which are heavily criticized for their inaccuracy and effects on civilians, were conducted under the Obama administration, and they have only escalated under Trump in what former Press Secretary Sean Spicer called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2017\/03\/09\/women-and-children-in-yemeni-village-recall-horror-of-trumps-highly-successful-seal-raid\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cvery, very well thought out and executed \u2026 highly successful operations.&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> In these \u201chighly successful operations,\u201d the United States supplies intelligence, refueling stations, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2016\/12\/14\/banned-by-119-countries-u-s-cluster-bombs-continue-to-orphan-yemeni-children\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cmore than $20 billion in new weapons transfers\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to the Saudi coalition. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These American weapons are used on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2016\/12\/14\/banned-by-119-countries-u-s-cluster-bombs-continue-to-orphan-yemeni-children\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201ccivilian sites, including homes, factories, markets, hospitals, children\u2019s schools, and [even] a funeral.\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Including on August 9 of this year, when 40 boys and 11 adults were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/aug\/19\/us-supplied-bomb-that-killed-40-children-school-bus-yemen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">killed in a school bus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that was destroyed by a bomb manufactured by defense contractor Lockheed Martin and supplied in a shipment of 1000 such bombs approved under the Obama administration in 2015. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/how-much-us-weapons-sales-saudi-arabia-trump-1167693\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Trump administration has continued<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the tradition of exporting arms to Saudi Arabia and recently <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/inthesetimes.com\/article\/21392\/donald-trump-yemen-war-saudi-arabia-ndaa-congress-ro-khanna-civilians\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">loosened the minimal rules<\/span><\/a><span that the \u201ctotal collapse\u201d of Yemen is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/press\/en\/2017\/sc12748.doc.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cthe largest humanitarian crisis in the world.\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> According to the World Food Programme, 3 million Yemeni have been internally displaced, 18 million are food insecure, and 8 million are entirely reliant upon humanitarian aid, most of whom are women and children, meaning that <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www1.wfp.org\/countries\/yemen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cfamine is a possibility for millions of people.\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most humanitarian aid sent to Yemen has been denied due to blockades run by the Saudi-led coalition for over three years, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/11\/yemenis-denounce-saudi-siege-collective-punishment-171106155409221.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201call Yemeni ground, air, and sea ports\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as of November 4, 2017. Before the war, Yemen relied upon imports of aid from its neighbors and the United States, as it was then and remains now the poorest country in the Middle East.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is an injustice to the people of Yemen to call what is happening to their country simply a war &#8211; it is a genocide. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The United States Senate voted on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/115th-congress\/senate-joint-resolution\/54\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a resolution to withdraw US forces from Yemen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on November 28. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/legislative\/LIS\/roll_call_lists\/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=115&amp;session=2&amp;vote=00250\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">63-37 vote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> discharged the resolution out of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and sent it to the Senate floor. If the motion to discharge had failed, the resolution would stay in committee and potentially die there. From the floor, the resolution will soon be up for a vote to proceed; and, if it proceeds, will be voted upon by the Senate in full.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kansas Senators Jerry Moran and Pat Roberts voted differently upon discharging the resolution. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Senator Jerry Moran voted Yea on the motion. He <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moran.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/news-releases?id=2CDBA42E-CFD1-4AB5-A805-B8972042513C\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">released a statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the same day:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s Congress\u2019s constitutional responsibility to authorize when the American military engages in war. Therefore, I will once again vote in favor of the joint resolution denying American military involvement in the Saudi-led war in Yemen.
