{"id":40598,"date":"2018-09-29T23:47:32","date_gmt":"2018-09-30T04:47:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=40598"},"modified":"2018-09-29T23:54:23","modified_gmt":"2018-09-30T04:54:23","slug":"tigers-defeat-the-bronchos-15-0-in-first-shut-out-game-in-10-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=40598","title":{"rendered":"Tigers Defeat the Bronchos 15-0 in First Shut-Out Game in 10 Years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>STORY BY MAKENNA ALLEN<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fort Hays State Tigers emerged victorious in their fifth game of the season against the University of Central Oklahoma with a score of 15-0. \u00a0Though neither team succeeded in scoring a touchdown during the Saturday evening game, the Bronchos were unable to score at all, allowing the Tigers their first shutout since 2008.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, kicker, Dante Brown, was attributed with all the scoring throughout the slow grind of a game. He also broke the school record for most field goals in a single game with five. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Tigers started out the homecoming game at Lewis Field Stadium with an 88-yard opening drive. \u00a0However, the team settled for a 21-yard field goal kicked by Brown. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDante Brown had one heck of a day,\u201d said FHSU Head Football Coach, Chirs Brown. \u201cJust Dante himself, having that confidence in him and knowing he\u2019s going to be able to put points on the board in any situation. We get to the 30 or 35-yard line, we know he has the leg to do it. \u00a0He\u2019s confident, he\u2019s locked in. \u201cWhen you trust your kicker, why not use him to get those points on fourth down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the game\u2019s 15 points are due to Brown\u2019s ability, Coach Brown credited the team\u2019s strong defense with the success of the game. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey played excellent. We put a lot of pressure on the quarterback, stopped their run game, got some turnovers. Those guys just pinned their ears back today and got after it,\u201d said Brown. \u201cThey played physical, played aggressive, all four quarters. Our defense played excellent, outstanding. I expect that every week.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the night\u2019s cool, rainy weather and the game\u2019s slow pace, the Tiger fan turnout was strong with 7,140 fans present. \u00a0This large crowd came out in support of Fort Hays\u2019 homecoming week. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJust having the fans in the stands and they way they cheer and the way they cheer for us, and on third downs when our opponents have the ball and it makes them struggle because they can\u2019t hear anything, it gives us energy. \u00a0It gives us excitement. It gives us something to play for because we\u2019re playing for them as well,\u201d said Brown. \u201cIf it weren\u2019t for them, who knows where we would be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even with this spirit, neither senior quarterback, Jacob Mezera nor back-up Chance Fuller was able to find success in leading the Tigers to a touchdown. \u00a0Despite this offensive struggle, Coach Brown was satisfied with the team\u2019s performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bronchos were hot off a victory against 4th-ranked Northwest Missouri State last weekend. \u00a0Coach Brown felt that this victory was key in sparking motivation within his players.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt really locked our guys in. They know Northwest is a very good team.
