In remembrance of the events of Sept. 11, 2001 Fort Hays State University students, along with members of the community, gathered together, despite heavy rain, last Wednesday for a candlelight vigil in front of the Memorial Union. The event, sponsored by the American Democracy Project and Tigers in Service featured singing of patriotic, traditional songs, a speech from Student Government Association President Chris Roberts, Salina junior, and members of the Kansas National Guard presenting the colors.<\/p>\n
Many of the students were quick to share why it was important to remember the events of 9\/11.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s just something that impacted the American people a lot\u2026.something that is dear and close to our hearts so we wanted to pay our respects,\u201d Ali Sedbrook, Thornton, Colo. Sophomore, said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs students I think we really need to remember that day and what happened\u2026out of respect for them (the men and women who worked at the site) and all the people who lost their lives that day\u2026even though it is raining\u2026 they went above and beyond I think we can give up a little bit too,\u201d Brenna Johnson, Beloit junior, said.<\/p>\n
In his speech Roberts said, people killed in the attack and due to the cleanup and rescue afterwards, \u201chave paid the ultimate price and for that, we owe those souls\u2014as well as the survivors and those serving everywhere today\u2014our deepest respect and gratitude. Appreciate those around you.
