ST. LOUIS – Four Fort Hays State wrestlers placed at the Maryville Kaufman\/Brand Open on Saturday (Nov. 14). Dakota Gulley and Jordan Davis each took fourth while Zach Kearney finished fifth and Joey Dozier took sixth.<\/p>\n
Gulley started the day on fire pinning the first two opponents he faced before losing by sudden victory to University of Indianapolis’ Dylan Faulkenberg. After bouncing back and defeating teammate Zach Kearney, Gulley then dropped the third place match to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M’s Shawn Michael Beeson.<\/p>\n
Davis went 4-2 on the way to fourth place in the 184-pound division. He received a bye in the first round before defeating Williams Baptist’s Perry Baltz with a major decision, 13-2. Davis then lost to Northeastern Oklahoma’s Joe Gaither 16-6. Davis bounced back with two straight victories by decision. The first an 8-4 victory over Baker’s Zachary Balden and the second was a 10-3 victory over Missouri Valley’s Dakota Concepcion. In the consolation semifinals, Davis pulled off a sudden victory win over University of Missouri’s Dalton Voyles before dropping the third place match to University of Indianapolis’ Jordan Collins by major decision 17-5.<\/p>\n
After receiving a bye in the first round of the 285-pound amateur bracket, Zach Kearney beat Maryville University’s Mickey Pelfrey by sudden victory in the second round. After falling to McKendree’s Chance Cooper by 3-2 decision in the third round, Kearney bounced back with two wins. The first was a 4-0 decision over Northeastern Oklahoma A&M’s Wess Bowman and the second was a pin of Missouri Baptist’s Devol Whitfield. Kearney then fell to fellow Tiger Dakota Gulley by a 2-1 decision before once again knocking off Cooper in the fifth place match with a 3-0 decision.<\/p>\n
Joey Dozier went 2-3 on the day at 157 pounds. He went 2-0 to start the day with a 13-9 decision over King University’s Landon Reed and an 8-3 decision over Jonathan Stewart. Dozier then dropped the next two by decision and had to take a medical forfeit in the fifth-place match due to an injury.<\/p>\n
